Introduction • Why should you meet Blackboard Collaborate? • You’ll be all ready to go for your LEEP live sessions this semester AND for future classes! • You’ll be aware of the main features that Blackboard Collaborate has to offer before classes start. • You’ll know who to contact for help!
Today’s Discussion • Moodle • The learning platform used by GSLIS and the starting point for logging into live class sessions. • Blackboard Collaborate (BBC) • The platform used for online class sessions at GSLIS.
Moodle – “Your New Best Friend” • Course content, GSLIS profiles, GSLIS info, and forums • Make sure to add your preferred email to your profile • Also contains access to Drop-In Rooms, BBC Meeting Room, and BBC tutorials • Tech Chat
Moodle – Logging into Class • Live session links from course Moodle space • Classes go “live” at least 30 minutes before session begins

Blackboard Collaborate (BBC) Student
BBC – Audio Setup Wizard • Calibrate headset • Toolsaudioaudio set-up wizard • Adjustable microphone and speaker settings: toolsaudiomicrophone and/or speakers settings ***Run it every time*** Shortcut to Audio Setup Wizard
BBC – Headsets • Various Types but we suggest wired, USB headsets with attached mic • Blackboard says Bluetooth is accepted but we have not had great luck with it
BBC – Participation • Status updates: emoticons, go “away”, raise hand, voting tools (✔,✖,A,B,C) • Chat window auto-scrolls • Double-click for private chat in separate tabs • Tip: Set up audible notifications for private chats in the “Preferences” menu
BBC – The Whiteboard • Moderators upload slides from PowerPoint using the “load content” button • Whiteboard toolbox • Select • Pointer • Drawing • Text boxes • Shapes & Lines • Screen captures • Photos
BBC – Application Sharing & Web Tour • Share applications and websites with the class • App Share – basic program sharing • Web Tour – for media-rich websites • Tip: Practice using these tools before class presentations in the 24/7 Drop-in Room or contact the Help Desk.
BBC – Video • Not used by all instructors • Activates in one click
BBC – Breakout Rooms • Used for group discussions • Moderator might randomly distribute you • Can drag yourself into a room • Chat and audio is not archived • Private whiteboard can be shared with the class
BBC – Layout Customization • Pull out and resize windows • Adjust magnification • “Restore Default Layout”
BBC – Other Business • Timer at the top during breaks • Play in the preferences to customize your experience • Send your slides into the Help Desk (help@support.lis.illinois.edu) no later than 4 hours before class • Powerpoint (ppt, pptx) or Open Office (odp) files ONLY • No PDFs, Prezis, or Word Docs • For ease of use, regularly clear your Java and browser caches http://groups.lis.illinois.edu/itdweb/cache/cache.php
