Safe With Us is a patient safety initiative developed by The Royal College of Chiropractors
Participation in the initiative represents a commitment from us to undertake a number of safety-focused activities: • Appoint a chiropractor as a ‘Patient Safety Lead’ for our clinic • Hold patient safety clinic meetings • Identify and share patient safety incidents that occur, nearly occur or could occur in our clinic • Discuss and learn from patient safety incidents in other clinics (through reference to CPiRLS) • Discuss and learn from relevant fitness to practice cases (through reference to GCC website or annual FTP report) • Post your own incidents on CPiRLS • Agree and adopt a patient safety incident policy in relation to the above
Role of Patient Safety Lead: • To organise and lead regular patient safety meetings to include routine sharing of reported Patient Safety Incidents • To help ensure practitioners and staff report patient safety incidents within the clinic • To receive reports of Patient Safety Incidents occurring in their clinic • To actively encourage all chiropractors in the clinic to share all patient safety incidents via CPiRLS (www.cpirls.org) and to assist them in the process as required • To liaise with all clinicians and staff to identify the need for change, and to implement appropriate changes • To encourage the implementation of routine clinical audit
Commitment from chiropractors in the clinic: • To routinely report patient safety incidents to the Patient Safety Lead • To attend the regular patient safety meetings organised by the Patient Safety Lead • To consider sharing patient safety incidents widely among the chiropractic profession via CPiRLS (www.cpirls.org) • To assist in the process of identifying the need for change (perhaps through audit) and implementing agreed changes in liaison with the Patient Safety Lead
Commitment from other clinic staff: • To routinely report patient safety incidents to the Patient Safety Lead • To attend the regular patient safety meetings as needed • To assist in the process of identifying the need for change and implementing agreed changes in liaison with the Patient Safety Lead
Why should we participate in the initiative? • Helps us demonstrate to patients that we are committed to their safety (optional – we may not wish to use the publicity materials) • Provides a structure for us to consider, share and learn from safety incidents locally and nationally for the benefit of patients • Allows us to identify the need for change in relation to patient safety and wellbeing • Through CPiRLS, helps other clinics improve aspects of chiropractic patient safety • Potentially contributes to CPD requirements • Helps us to fulfil the requirements of the Patient Partnership Quality Mark (PPQM) and AQP status
Contents of Safe With Us pack: • Poster, patient leaflet and logo to publicise our involvement to patients (optional to use these) • Suggested plan for Patient Safety meetings • CPD certificates to confirm our participation in this meeting • Draft Patient Safety Incident Management Policy • CPiRLS screensaver and trigger list
