  3. Interpretations Which age group has the greatest number of people?Which bar includes your age group?Are there more people in your age group or the group below you?

  4. Interpretations Population pyramids can show the history of a country’s population growth. Some western countries had a “baby-boom” between the years of 1945-1965. This boom can now be seen as a bulge in the middle of pyramid 2.

  5. Interpretations In an expanding population the dependants are mainly ____. In a contracting population, the dependants are ____.

  6. Importance to Governments? • Why would a government want to know the age structure and gender of the population? • Services?

  7. Assignment • Everyone is going to draw a population pyramid for a specific country. • First we will practice with the U.S. • Everyone will need a graph activity sheet and a pencil.

  8. Building a Population Pyramid • Males on the left, Females on the right, measured as a percent of the population.

  9. Pyramid Population Game • Everyone will need a blank graph sheet and a pencil. • Mr. G will form groups. • Each group gets a modified pyramid data table.

Pyramid Population Game • Group 1 is assigned countries 1-5. • Group 2 is assigned countries 6-10. • Group 3 is assigned countries 11-15. • Group 4 is assigned countries 16-20. • Group 5 is assigned countries 21-25. • Group 6 is assigned countries 26-30. • Group 7 is assigned countries 31-35.

  11. Pyramid Population Game • Draw the population pyramid for your country following instructions from Mr. Gomme • Your group will try and correctly match each pyramid with each country for every group • The group with the most correct answers will win big prizes and bragging rights
