HARPS NEF Project Teams • Harvard University • Funding through the Harvard University Origins of Life Initiative • Overall Instrument Responsibility at the Center for Astrophysics • Harvard College Observatory • Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory • Geneva Observatory • HARPS Design & Background • Science and Engineering Resource Contributor • Major Funded Hardware Contributor • ING’s William Herschel Telescope • ING Facility & Operations as agreed thru MOU HARPS-NEF PDR December 6 & 7, 2007
HARPS-NEF Program Schedule HARPS-NEF PDR December 6 & 7, 2007
Schedule Comments • Fast schedule to Build/Assemble/Test relies on significant reuse of design • Orders MUST be placed in January with expected 9-12 month lead times for gratings/grisms/optics • Procurements before CDR of items with 4-6 month lead times (i.e. major machining) • Installation at WHT requires early facility agreement/processing • Design verification requires early prototype and/or field work ( i.e. fiber run/rotator) HARPS-NEF PDR December 6 & 7, 2007
Budget Overview • Commitment from Harvard • Geneva Proposal Accepted for Hardware Funding • Status of Major Capital Expenditures • CCD order placed with E2V • Cryostat Build at ESO in Process, Model Delivered • Calibration Light Box Fabrication in Process • RFQ’s submitted/received responses: • Echelle Grating (ASz prepared Spec & RFQ) • Cross Dispersion Grism (ASz prepared Spec & RFQ) • Collimator Parabola (ASz working alternate vendors) • Camera Optics (RFQ updates in process) HARPS-NEF PDR December 6 & 7, 2007
ING/WHT Facility Questions • Facility Modifications and Installations: • What does the ING/WHT require in terms of building modification processes, documentation, building code review, inspection or other? • Does the ING/WHT recommend we use local contractors or can we make arrangements for staff support? • Site preparation, electrical preparation, general labor for construction services • Prototype of Fiber Routing • Will access to the WHT be available for prototyping? • When is the best time (least impact to WHT operations)?
