Learn how to use the Cornell note-taking method to improve your studying and comprehension skills. This technique helps organize information and predict test questions.
E N D
Step 1: Use plain 8.5”x11” paper
Step 2: Draw 1 horizontal line on the bottom.
Step 3: Draw 1 vertical line on the left.
The LEFTside is for practice TEST questions. The BOTTOMis for a SHORT summary of the page’s contents. TEST Q’s SHORT SUMMARY
Step 4: Grab some highlighters and your reading.
Step 5: HIGHLIGHT these parts: Difficult Words Headings OR the topic sentences Terminology Testable facts
Difficult Words Headings OR the topic sentences Terminology Testable facts
Difficult Words Look these up BEFORE you read; otherwise, you won’t understand what you’re reading very well!
Headings OR the topic sentence This helps you guess how the information will be sorted.
Terminology Testable facts Only write down things you think your teacher WILL test you on!
Headings OR the topic sentences Terminology Testable facts Difficult Words
Step 6: Put the first HEADING (green) on the page. That’s your MAIN IDEA. This is normally highlighter or underlined. • Life of cells
Step 7: Add all of the YELLOWinformation to the page. PARAPHRASE HEAVILY – no unnecessary facts! • Life of cells • cell cycle: life cycle of cells • Cell cycle starts: cell formed; ends -> division • 1st makes copy -> DNA • =deoxyribonucleic acid • =hereditary material • =controls ALL activities in • cell • DNA organized into chromosomes • Steps depend on if prokaryotic or eukaryotic • prokaryotic: no nucleus • eukaryotic: nucleus
Life of cells • cell cycle: life cycle of cells • Cell cycle starts: cell formed; ends -> division • 1st makes copy -> DNA • =deoxyribonucleic acid • =hereditary material • =controls ALL activities in • cell • DNA organized into chromosomes • Steps depend on if prokaryotic or eukaryotic • prokaryotic: no nucleus • eukaryotic: nucleus • Prokaryotic Life Cycle • prokaryotic = ↓ complex • bacteria = prokaryotes • ribosomes • single circular DNA molecule • X membrane-bound organelles • binary fission: bact. cell div
Step 9: Add these question types: vocabulary compare and contrast lists true or false idea comprehension questions • Life of cells • cell cycle: life cycle of cells • Cell cycle starts: cell formed; ends -> division • 1st makes copy -> DNA • =deoxyribonucleic acid • =hereditary material • =controls ALL activities in • cell • DNA organized into chromosomes • Steps depend on if prokaryotic or eukaryotic • prokaryotic: no nucleus • eukaryotic: nucleus • Prokaryotic Life Cycle • prokaryotic = ↓ complex • bacteria = prokaryotes • ribosomes • single circular DNA molecule • X membrane-bound organelles • binary fission: bact. cell div
cell cycle • DNA • what does DNA control? • how do we organize DNA? • c & C prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. • are bacteria PRO or EU karyotic? • What DO bacteria contain? List 3 things. • binary fission • ribosomes Try to LINE UP the questions with their answers! • Life of cells • cell cycle: life cycle of cells • Cell cycle starts: cell formed; ends -> division • 1st makes copy -> DNA • =deoxyribonucleic acid • =hereditary material • =controls ALL activities in • cell • DNA organized into chromosomes • Steps depend on if prokaryotic or eukaryotic • prokaryotic: no nucleus • eukaryotic: nucleus • Prokaryotic Life Cycle • prokaryotic = ↓ complex • bacteria = prokaryotes • ribosomes • single circular DNA molecule • X membrane-bound organelles • binary fission: bact. cell div
cell cycle DNA what does DNA control? how do we organize DNA? c & C prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. are bacteria PRO or EU karyotic? What DO bacteria contain? List 3 things. binary fission ribosomes prokaryotes prokaryotic eukaryotic Step 10: Add the BRIEF summary. This will help you when you’re searching for specific information later. You can use your headings IF they’re relevant. • Life of cells • cell cycle: life cycle of cells • Cell cycle starts: cell formed; ends -> division • 1st makes copy -> DNA • =deoxyribonucleic acid • =hereditary material • =controls ALL activities in • cell • DNA organized into chromosomes • Steps depend on if prokaryotic or eukaryotic • prokaryotic: no nucleus • eukaryotic: nucleus • Prokaryotic Life Cycle • prokaryotic = ↓ complex • bacteria = prokaryotes • ribosomes • single circular DNA molecule • X membrane-bound organelles • binary fission: bact. cell div CELL CYCLE PROKARYOTIC LIFE CYCLE
So WHY do we use this technique? • It encourages you to think critically about the notes. • By forming questions, you start thinking like the teacher. • It helps you predict what questions you might be asked by the teacher for your test.
cell cycle • DNA • what does DNA control? • how do we organize DNA? • c & C prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. • are bacteria PRO or EU karyotic? • What DO bacteria contain? List 3 things. • binary fission • ribosomes • prokaryotes • prokaryotic • eukaryotic • When you’re studying for the quiz, just FOLD the paper and you already have review questions finished for you. • If you can’t answer the questions (or to check your answer), unfold the paper.
From this point on, we’ll practice this. • On THURSDAY (ELP 89-01) or FRIDAY (ELP 89-02), you will take a quiz using notes you’re going to take.
From this point on, we’ll practice this. • You can only write on ONE piece of paper using the Cornell method for each reading. • If you write EVERYTHING, I won’t be able to accept your notes.
