ATAS StatementAcademic Technology Approval Scheme • FCO vetting scheme (from 1 November 2007) “to prevent any terrorists or hostile nations from acquiring WMDs through technology or skills obtained through study in the UK” • ALL non-European Economic Area applicants • Supervisor must provide paragraph describing project and methods • Applicants submit ATAS statement + personal details to FCO for approval before applying for a Visa, Entry Clearance or Extension of Stay • Combined assessment of the student AND project
Costs/Fees Independently sponsored students “Enhanced Tuition Fees” • Living Expenses (£8,000 pa) • Basic Tuition FeesHome/EU: £3,460 pa Overseas: £14,380 pa • Laboratory expenses Basic fee + “Bench Fee” Range £2,500-£15,000 pa UK sponsors will pay all above but NOT overseas fees • Must be requested before an offer is made • Do not quote separate fees to applicants
Responsibility of Potential Supervisors: • Ensure University application form completed • Deal with applications ASAP • Inform PG Secretary/Selector of decision • Complete Recruitment Form fully
Types of PhD • Standard PhD(3 years FT, 6 years PT) • 4 Year PhDsWellcome Trust/Research Councils1styear 3 research attachments, specialise years 2-4PhD with Integrated MSc in Molecular Medicine1st year MSc, standard PhD years 2-4 but with “cohort activities”
PhDs with research overseas • Joint Location (3 years FT)Minimum 1 year in Sheffield • Remote Location (6 years PT)Project abroad - minimum 1 face to face meeting/year • Entry Criteria • OS or EU based students (normal entry requirements) • adequate supervisory arrangements abroad • access to the library, computing and other research facilities • must be approved by Faculty NB All students are initially registered for MPhil and must pass examination to upgrade to PhD
