Ions

Ions. Ions are charged particles. The charge on an ion is the DIFFERENCE between the p + and e -. Chlor ide ion. General term for negative ion = Anion. General term for positive ion = Cation. Ions form because atoms want to have a full valence shell ( outer energy level).

  1. Ions

  2. Ions are charged particles • The charge on an ion is the DIFFERENCE between the p+ and e- Chloride ion General term for negative ion = Anion

  3. General term for positive ion = Cation

  4. Ions form because atoms want to have a full valence shell (outer energy level). • like the nearest noble gas. • They will do this the easiest way possible.

  5. Valence ElectronsNumber of electrons in the outer shell of an atom 1e- 3e- 4e- 5e- 6e- 7e- 2e- Full outer shell One or two

  6. How do the following form ions, and what’s their notation? Remember this? p+? no? e-? Bromine? Potassium? Oxygen? Aluminum?

  7. Ions vs. Atoms (and their isotopes)

  8. THE END
