  2. Audience • Elementary : 5th grade • Marine Animals-Basic Information • Middle/lower class rural community • All kids must use the power point. It will be used as an extra study tool for kids who need additional help.

  3. Environment • Students will be working individually • Computer lab • During class • For additional practice, students may use this at home or after school.

  4. Objectives • Students will be able to identify information about whales with 95% accuracy solely using the PowerPoint. • Students will be able to identify information about dolphins with 95% accuracy solely using the PowerPoint. • Students will be able to identify information about sharks with 95% accuracy solely using the PowerPoint. • Students will be able to identify information about sea turtles with 95% accuracy solely using the PowerPoint.

  6. You may have seen these animals in real life or in movies. Let’s learn some facts about different the different marine animals. Make sure you are paying attention to what you are reading. There will be a small quiz at the end.

  7. Whales: Who are they?

  8. Blue Whale • I am the largest animal that has ever lived. • I can weigh up to 200 tons. That is more than 30 elephants. • I eat krill and need at least 3 million calories a day. • I only need to surface every 4-7 minutes to breath. • My tongue can weigh 22 tons, and my heart can weigh 1,500 pounds.

Killer Whale • I am mostly black with white sides and a white spot behind my eye. • I weigh anywhere from 3-4 tons. • My real name is Orca, but I am also called a killer whale. • I eat fish, squid, seals, and other small animals. • I only have to surface to breathe every 20 minutes. • I am smarter and easier to train than a dolphin. • You may have seen me at Sea World. I am known as Shamu.

Dolphin Facts • I navigate by bouncing high pitched sounds off of objects, then I listen to the echoes. • I heard my food into a small area with the help of other dolphins. • I like to eat fish and squid. • I swallow fish whole. • I have 100 teeth in my mouth • I sleep with one eye closed and only half of my brain working.

  18. I can live up to 50 years old. • When babies are born, they are born tail first. • I can dive 1,000 feet deep. • I can swim up to 25 mph for long periods of time. • I have two stomachs. One is for storing food and the other is for digesting food. • I do not have a very good sense of smell.

  23. Sharks • My ancestors have been around for about 400 million years. • We were hunting the oceans before dinosaurs roamed the earth. • We have the most powerful jaws on the planet. • We may grow and use over 20,000 teeth. • Unlike humans, both our upper and lower jaw move.

  24. Great White Shark • I eat different types of fish and mammals. • I do not chew my food. My teeth rip the food, and I swallow it whole. • A big meal can satisfy me for up to 2 months. • On average, we are 12-16 feet long. • The female sharks are larger than the males. • If the individual has two different types of dominant alleles, both phenotypes are seen. • I can smell one drop of water in 25 gallons of water.

  25. Hammerhead Shark • I live around 20-30 years. • My wide spread eyes give me a better view of the ocean. • I use my flat head to pin my prey to the ocean floor. • I can grow up to 20 feet long and weigh up to 1,000 pounds. • I am a carnivore. That means I only eat meat.

  30. Sea Turtles • There are 7 different species of sea turtles. • Some of us eat meat, plants, or both. • We lay 50-200 eggs at a time. • We can live up to 80 years old. • It takes 40-70 days for the eggs to hatch. • We weigh anywhere from 60-2,000 pounds
