Measurement SIG Monday, 24 April 2006 Spring Member’s Meeting
The Measurement SIG • Meet and share info • List: wg-measurement@internet2.edu • Basically dormant, with occasional gem • Subscribe via visit tohttps://mail.internet2.edu/wws/info/wg-measurement
Measurement SIG Agenda • Agenda bash:anyone have anything to share? • NPAD/pathdiag update [30-ish] (Mathis)http://www.psc.edu/~mathis/papers/PathDiag20060424.ppt • HOPI measurement update [1] • Network measurement for international connections early thoughts [15] (Zekauskas) • Open discussion
HOPI Measurement or “what do I do about ‘lightpaths’”
HOPI • Initial plan for active measurement: • Measurement machines • continuously/periodically… • signal network • measure resulting path (throughput, latency) • Cycle through full mesh of 5 HOPI nodes (will initially, at least, pre-compute schedule) • Exercise control plane as much as verifying circuits
HOPI • One control plane sort-of stable [The DRAGON control plane] • Working on an iperf that does signalling as test, first step • Then can consider more • The periodic schedule • Testing with bwctl doing the signalling (or scheduling) instead of iperf
Network Measurement for International Connections • An NSF-funded small grant • Look at current international connections program (International Research Network Connections, or IRNC) • Is there a standard set of measurements we could recommend? • There are many possible tools • There are many possible options
Caveat • Matt Mathis has a companion SGER • These thoughts are certainly not all mine • But I’ll take the blame for any bad stuff
Why? • Understand how network is being used • Understand performance difficulties • Understand routing • Quality control
There’s a Wiki with working notes • http://people.internet2.edu/~ghb/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/InternationalMeasurement/HomePage • The good stuff starts here:http://people.internet2.edu/~ghb/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/InternationalMeasurement/NotesMetrics
