Example Keyano College will provide students with a learning experience that is engaging, enriching and enlightening
Australian Example • Our vision is to provide all students with at least one global learning experience during their program. • Associated Guiding Principles • Collaborative group work including global learning projects • Innovative & Integrated assessment including quiz, peer assessment and self assessment • Learning designs based upon • Problem • Role • Case • Scientific method • Highly visual and interactive learning objects
Changing Direction: Focus on Learning • Observation • Concentration seems to be on technology • But technology constantly changes • Ed Tech Steering Cttee • Teaching & Learning Cttee • Experts…. • “Technology in itself does not change or improve teaching & learning……”
Changing Direction: Focus on Learning • Shift towards student-centred learning • Knowledge-driven with emphasis on critical thinking skills • Teaching spaces built for long-term sustainability • allow for the exploration of the best uses of technology based upon specific learning needs
Thoughts on Learning • Synchronous and Asynchronous learning • Face-to-face, video, audio, teacher & student led • Computer, web-based, self-paced, student led • eCampus • Blended delivery models • Maximize utilization of space • Adjunct faculty members • Global learning
Yetton Framework • Broad statements that lead to long term planning for eLearning, eTeaching and design of learning statements • 5 key factors • Structure • Strategy • Technology • Management • Roles/Skills
Yetton Framework Cont’d • 5 Learning Designs • Explore, describe, apply: a problem focussed learning design • Observe, represent, refine: developing scientifically-acceptable mental models of non-visible physical phenomena • Review, access, question, decide, report, reflect: structured problem solving • Review, interpret, construct, justify: A situated problem focussed learning design • enRole, Research, React, Resolve, Reflect: Developing and using online role play learning design
Yetton Framework: Example 22 actions placed into the framework Technology in itself does not change or improve teaching and learning. Attention to management processes, strategy, structure, and most importantly roles and skills are key to successfully introducing technology in university teaching and learning.
Recommendations • Development of clear statements that focus on learning • Strategic Plan that focuses on learning, eLearning, eTeaching and learning space design • Develop guiding principles, factors and learning designs similar to Australia • Change the structure of the Ed Tech Steering CTTE so that it becomes a subcommittee • Move Teaching and Learning Cttee to the forefront • Leadership of the Teaching and Learning Cttee perhaps at a Dean/Director’s Level or even VP • Complete learning strategic plan within 2008-2009 academic year
Radical Thoughts • Change SETC’s name to…. • The Learning Innovation Centre • Market this centre so that it appears as an important link within the College’s Business Plan • Include SETC in discussion about building design for the health science and trades buildings.
