Dunder Mifflin Paper Company
Business Scenario • We are a major paper competitor out of Scranton, PA. We are in high competition with Target, Staples, Office Depot, and Best Buy. We develop a need for paper in every market we enter. Our quality and competitive advantage in the market for paper has pushed us to expand our product over multiple markets. Our need for expansion has created a necessity for a website. As a developing company we have cracked down on this and looked to create this website with the greatest hopes of continuing our dominance in the market for paper.
Business Justification • Aid in marketing and sales • Provide information and support 24/7 • Online listing and advertising • Additional online sales
Possible Hosting Solutions • Self-hosting • Shared-hosting • Dedicated hosting • Co-location
Hosting Decision: • Self hosting would be a good idea for the future if our company grows • The implementation costs of buying servers and server equipment make self hosting and co-location an impossibility at this point. • That leaves us with shared hosting and dedicated hosting. • For now we only need shared hosting, as Dunder Mifflin's venture into e-commerce grows, we may require dedicated hosting.
Possible Open Source Applications • Zen Cart • 4 out of 5 star rating • 455 users • Gives you the mobility to change different fields within the template keeping their design • Did have shopping cart and shipping features • Did not choose this one
Possible Open Source Applications • Freeway • Relitivly new CMS E-commerce application with only 38 users • At first we were not interested because of the low amount of users • Had all the features we were looking for • Shopping cart and shipping options • Also a check out page
Possible Open Source Applications • OS Commerce • 470 users • Been around the longest out of all the other e-commerce applications • Does not have a login page for an admin • Has an abundance of documentation including installation folders and other folders to help walk you through to configure the system
Freeway • Freeway • We chose Freeway because it had a customer friendly feel to it. • The main page is well organized and easy to navigate. • Had all the specific functions we were looking for in an application
Installation • Freeway was an easy program to install. • There was an installation guide to walk you through the process step by step. • We downloaded the main Freeway application to the pluto server. • After the download we opened the install wizard which walked us through. • Had to input all the server and database information correctly then we were up and running.
Installation Cont. • After install we had the default Freeway template that we were able to manipulate • Now we have the Dunder Mifflin feel
Problems and Solutions • After 3 uncessuful attempts at installing Freeway we finally got it working. • These errors were relatively simple to avoid for someone who is familiar with open source applications. • We put in the wrong data for server information. • Each of the errors we encountered appeared on the top of the Freeway page and were easily identified.
Problems and Solutions Cont. • We had some issues trying to change the template for the Freeway main page. • In the admin page they use an HTML writer which tried to pull information from the original files in freeway but since installation the original files were named differently or needed to be redirected with our server. • By simply renaming a few things it all works.
