IDENTIFICATION OF IONS PREPARED BY: ERDEM ULUÇINAR
When we have an ion which we don’t know we can use some methods to identfy it. In this slide show, I will talk about: • Testing for Halide Ions • Testing for Sulphate Ions • Testing for Metal Ions
1. Testing for halide ions • Apparatus: • Nitric acid(to make the environment acidic for silver nitrate. • Silver Nitrate(Reagent for halide ions)
Method • Take a small amount of solutions. • Add dilute nitric acid to all of them in same amounts • Environment is ready. Add silver nitrate.
Observation White Cream No pre. Colourless Colourless Yellow Cl Br Cl or Br
2. TESTING FOR SULPHATE IONS • Apparatus: • Hydrochloric acid(to make the environment acidic) • Barium Nitrate Solution(Reagent of Sulphate Ions)
Method • Take a small amount of the solutions • Add dilute hydrochloric acid in equal sizes • Add barium nitrate
Observation Colourless Colourless white Colourless Yellow Colourless NOSO4 SO4 NOSO4
3. TESTING FOR METAL IONS • Apparatus: • Sodium hydroxide(reagent of metal ions)
Method • Take a small amount of solutions • Add a few drops of sodium hydroxide
After having the possible results, add OH one more time. • There are possible results for it again.
Observation • After adding the first hydroxide: Green Fe(II) Pale Blue Cu(II) Red Brown Fe(III) White White White
After Adding Second Hydroxide To 3 White Precipitate White precipitate Ca Colourless dissolve Al or Zn
