Stewardship: Trust the Provider Not the Provision Matthew 6:19-21
Sabbath • What was the Sabbath? (Exod 20:8-11; Deut 5:12-15) • Rest and freedom from work • Potentially limited the amount of income Israel could accumulate • Trust – What humans can provide in 7 consecutive days of work, God provides in 6 • Day devoted to God • Do we do this in today’s hectic world? • What if God said, “Cut back your hours and I’ll make up the difference”? • God frees his people from the need to work so they may be free to devote the day to him • “Trust me this day to take care of your needs”
Sabbath Applied • Manna (Exod 16:1-24) • Mannawas designed to rot away • Instills trust in the Provider not the provision • God tests his people with manna to see if they really trust him • Trust the Provider not the provision
In God We Trust • Both the Sabbath and manna are about trust • Do we trust that God will take of us even when we rest from work? • Do we understand that manna (wealth) is designed to rot away? How often do we try to hoard manna (like Israelites) rather than trust in God? • Are we relying on a rotting wealth or God who graciously meets our needs? • Do we trust the Provider or the provision? (John 6:25-35) • 1 Timothy 6:17-21
