  2. Objectives for Today • Share information on the UCLA settlement • Share EH&S’ plans for settlement implementation and beyond • Obtain feedback

UCLA Settlement • Fatal accident December 29, 2008 • July 27, 2012- a settlement was signed • Chemistry and Biochemistry • Provide list of lab facilities • Formal Lab Safety Manual/Chemical Hygiene Plan • All lab personnel, including PIs receive training • SOP requirements (list of 500, pyrophorics)

  4. UCLA Settlement Cont. • Chemistry and Biochemistry Continued • Enhanced reporting and inspection requirements • Treat accident sites as a crime scene • UCLA requirements  UC Policy • Personal Protective Equipment • Training • Lab Inspections (no policy yet)

  5. Lab Safety Culture Change Initiative • Full support of EVCP and VC-R • Charter document under development • Phase 1-Chemistry and Biochemistry • By January 11 • Lessons learned used for Phase 2 • Phase 2-Everyone else • Ongoing

  6. Phase 2 • Resources needed • Launch new Chemical Hygiene Plan • Enhanced inspection • Implement PPE/Training Policy • SOP development
