~Life Span~ • Juan Ponce de Leon was born in 1460 in Santervas, Spain. • He died in 1521 at the age of 61 in Havana, Cuba. • De Leon was shot in Florida, by Indians, by a poison arrow.
Sailed For... • Juan Ponce de Leon began sailing with Columbus for Spain. • Columbus left him in the Santo Domingo (now known as the Dominican Republic), because he wanted to explore, and he began his next journey alone. • He then sailed to the neighboring island of Borinquen (now know as Puerto Rico).
Exploration • Juan Ponce de Leon made 4 voyages in his life time. • Examples are one to Puerto Rico, Florida, Cuba, etc.
Why...? • Juan Ponce de Leon went on his voyages because he was looking for the fountain of youth and other riches such as gold.
Where'd he Travel? • De Leon traveled to the United States and the southern tip of North America including parts of the Caribbean Islands.
The Result... • We found out about the islands south of North America like Cuba, Puerto Rico, he also found Florida. • Also he discovered many areas along the way and the Gulf Stream which was important for later trips from Europe to America.
Fun Facts... • Juan Ponce de Leon died in Cuba, but his remains were later transferred to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where they were put to rest in San Juan Cathedral. Puerto Rico's third-largest city, Ponce, bears the explorer's name. • Juan Ponce de Leon was descended from the Spanish Royal family.
How Important...? • We believe that Juan Ponce de Leon was very important to today’s society. • He was important because he discovered many areas around the Gulf Stream which was important for later trips from Europe to America.
