  17. Geography of India • Indus River – in northwestern part of Indian subcontinent (Pakistan) • Subcontinent – a piece of a continent on a separate tectonic plate • Himalayas created by Indian plate pushing into Asian plate • Diverse geography – mountains, deserts, plateaus, river valleys • First civilizations in Indus River Valley • Monsoons – winds that create dry and wet seasons in India

  19. Harappa and Mohenjo Daro • Some of the biggest cities in world at the time (around 2500 B.C.E.) • Mohenjo Daro around 35,000, Harappa 23,000 • What technology do you need for that many people to live in the same area? • Sanitation systems – most advanced for time period • A lot of food – couldn’t farm in city

  20. Planned Cities • Cities were not just thrown together – evidence they were planned ahead of time • What evidence do we have of this? • Grid layout • Same-sized bricks • Locations chosen to avoid flooding

  21. Writing System • Appears to be evidence of Hindu religion on the walls – but we aren’t sure • Cities have lots of writing on them – but we can’t read it • No Rosetta Stone – why does this matter? • What does this mean for our study of this civilization?

  22. Cities Disappear • Around 1750 B.C.E., the cities appear to have emptied out suddenly • What could have caused huge cities like this to suddenly de-populate?
