  3. DICTIONARY DEFINITIONS Coach: a person who teaches and trains an athlete or performer. Leader: a person in charge or in control.

  4. COACH What are the characteristics of a GOOD coach?

  6. TEACHER A good coach has the ability to teach fundamental skills of the game or activity. “Basketball, like all sports, is predicated on the execution of fundamentals. The coach is a teacher. His subject: fundamentals.” Dr. Jack Ramsay, Hall of Fame Basketball Coach

  7. MOTIVATOR A good coach motivates individuals to achieve personal excellence.

  13. VISIONARY A good leader has the ability to see a future others do not see.

  14. INSPIRATIONAL A good leader inspires others by showing their passion for the vision.

  15. GOAL-SETTER A good leader guides others in strategically setting achievable goals and action plans.

  16. TRUST BUILDER A good leader builds trust by modeling strong core values and personal integrity.

  17. EMPOWERING A good leader provides opportunities for others to lead.

  18. GOOD TO GREAT A GREAT coach is a GOOD leader! and A GREAT leader is a GOOD coach!

  19. GOOD TO GREAT How do we help a good coach become a good leader and a great coach?

  20. GOOD TO GREAT 1. Create opportunities for the coach to lead others. Example: Ask them to facilitate a meeting, chair a committee, or lead a project.

  21. GOOD TO GREAT 2. Ask the coach to share their vision of what will be the accomplishments of the committee or outcomes of the project.

  22. GOOD TO GREAT 3. Provide feedback using the 3 C’s to build leadership skills and confidence.

  23. GOOD TO GREAT 4. Empower the coach to succeed by allowing them to fail.

  24. GOOD TO GREAT 5. Develop a plan to hold the coach accountable for showing consistency, speaking truthfully, and accepting responsibility.
