This project aims to implement the SBAS system and leverage community research funding in the ACAC and ASECNA regions. The EGNOS system is presented as a navigation solution with numerous benefits. The implementation of EGNOS procedures can improve navigation accuracy, reduce costs, and enhance safety in aviation. The advantages of EGNOS-based procedures are discussed along with the regions where implementation is recommended.

EGNOS presentation EGNOS NPA Availability: EGNOS APV Availability: EGNOS NPA Availability is defined as the percentage of samples in which the Horizontal Protection Level is below Alert Limit for NPA (HPL<556m) over the total period. EGNOS APV-I Availability is defined here as the percentage of epochs in a month in which the Protection Level are below Alert Limits for this APV-I service (HPL<40m and VPL<50m) over the total period.
Main advantatges of procedures based on EGNOS APV SBAS Advantages: Aircraft Operators Leading to: • Optimised approach routing from various arrival directions • Optimum descent profile • Engine-idle descents • Improved track keeping • Use of more flexible route and procedure designs • Reduced fuel burn and noise footprints • Reduced environmental impact • Reduced Radio Traffic (R/T) • Reduced controller and pilot workload • Reduced delays, diversion and cancellations due to bad weather • Reduced costs Airports and Air Navigation Service Providers • Limited need for ground infrastructure • Can be implemented in areas where ILS cannot be sited for terrain or obstacle reasons • Can provide approaches to more runways without additional infrastructure costs • Increase the usability of many airports
Where to implement EGNOS procedures? • Balance between airport traffic and its infrastructure (see table) • Strategy of each airport (General aviation flights, commercial airport, hub) • Interest of airlines and operators • Political wills, as the implementation of new procedures have a direct impact to the airport and its associated area • …in general, major benefits are obtained by implementing APV in small and medium airports without ILS or only with one ILS installed. The identification of the most suitable airports for implementing APV procedures should take into account the following aspects: As back-up forthe ILS For NPA RWYs
