Ovaries • Ovaries are small (~3cm long) oval shaped organs attached to the uterus by ligaments. • Ovaries produce eggs as well as two female sex hormones (oestrogen and progesterone)
Oviduct and Fimbriae • The oviducts (fallopian tubes) are not attached to the ovaries. One end of the oviduct is funnel shaped and fringed with tentacle like projections (fimbriae). • The oviduct transports the eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. The egg is pushed along by movements of millions of cilia on the inner lining of the tubes.
Uterus • The uterus provides protection and nutrition for the developing embryo and fetus. • Most of the uterus consists of the myometrium, which is smooth muscle that functions to eject the baby during birth.
Uterus • The inner linning of the uterus (endometrium) is glandular and grows to a thick, blood vessel-rich, glandular tissue layer. • This layer provides anchorage and nutrition for the embryo.
Vagina • The vagina is the muscular tube through which the penis enters the female during intercourse and through which the baby is born. • At the end of the vagina is the cervix, a narrow opening into the uterus. During pregnancy the cervix is blocked by a special antibacterial mucosal plug which prevents infection.
