  1. By: John McCarthy Battle Strategies of the Civil War

  2. Battle Strategies There were two main battle strategies of the Union. They were the Anaconda Plan and the plan of waging total war. The Anaconda Plan called for trapping their enemy. It looked like the killing grip of an Anaconda hence its name. The main strategy of the Confederacy was to play a defensive war. It worked before in the Revolutionary War so they thought it would work now.

  3. Who Made Up the Strategies The Anaconda Plan was made by General Winfield Scott and President Lincoln. To wage total war was made up by General Grant(All from the Union). Technically George Washington made up the plan of playing a defensive war, the Confederacy adopted the plan. President Lincoln General Grant George Washington

  4. Effective Strategies The most effective strategy for the Union was to wage total War. General Grant, General Sheridan, and General Sherman all waged total war. This strategy won them the war. The south’s effective strategy was to play defense. Though they were badly outnumbered by playing defense they put up a fight.

  5. Leaders of the Civil War The Union had many different major leaders of the Civil War. Examples are General Scott and General McClellan. The final leader was General Scott. This was the general Lincoln was looking for. The South only had one major leader and that was General Lee. He was an outstanding leader and seasoned at war. General Lee

  6. Battles of the Civil War and There Outcomes The first battle was Bull Run. It was an outstanding victory for the South and a devastating defeat for the North. There were many more battles after that, some very bloody(Battle of Antietam). Then came the Appomattox. It was the final battle and ended the war with the Union capturing Richmond, Virginia and winning.

  7. Conclusion The Civil War was full of exciting and devastating battles. The strategies they used were extremely smart, like the people who thought of them. Many of them were effective. There were many leaders in the Civil war and many battles. In the end the Union won.
