Pressey Testing MachineMay 5, 1928 • The Pressey Testing Machine was invented by Sidney Pressey. This machine would allow teachers to save time in grading and allowing it for drill/practice. There were only 160 that were sold out of 250 that were produced.
Educational Radio1930s and 1940s • In the early 1930s and 1940s, the radio was a huge hit. Special children’s programs were introduced and broadcasted in order to attract young listeners. • Many programs became successful and production increased. Children of all ages took pleasure in listening to programs that were educational. • Edwin Armstrong was the creator of FM radio.
Instructional Television EventJanuary 1, 1932 • The University of Iowa was the first to broadcast an instructional television event for a world’s fair(the development of TV in education slowed due to the war).
Television in EducationOctober 1, 1952 • The Ford foundation funds Educational Television in 1952. • The Ford foundation spent over 170 million dollars on television instruction. • Educational television is the use of television programs in the field of distance education.
Teaching Machines BF Skinner Teaching MachineMay 8, 1956 • Burrhus Frederic Skinner saw a need for more automated ways for students to learn. The machine would enable students to have immediate feedback.
BF Skinner Teaching Machines: ScienceOctober 28, 1958 • Skinner argued that the use of Teaching Machines would enable students to move at their individual pace. • Skinner concluded that this procedure would make education more efficient and closer to the industrial model of educating more people. • Skinner felt that students were held to the speed of the slowest learners in the class.
International Business Machines(IBM)1970 • IBM is a multinational computer technology and IT consulting corporation. IBM manufactures and sells computer hardware and software, offers infrastructure services, hosting services and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology. • In 1970 IBM introduced System/370 as IBM’s new computer series mainframe. • These new machines would support time sharing and online computing. • IBM now controls about three quarters of the world market for mainframe computers.
E-mailJanuary 1, 1971 • Ray Tomlinson was the first to invent a way to send massages between computers using the @ symbol. • However, Tomlinson did not remember the exact date and what the first message said. • On January 1, 1972, Larry Roberts was the first one to invent how to respond and forward to messages.
Apple II Personal ComputerApril 1, 1977 • The Apple II was the first personal computer to be successfully mass produced. • This computer was found in several schools and even offered students the opportunity to play educational games.
Radio Shack Model 1001983 • The Radio Shack Model 100 was one of the first notebook style computers featuring a keyboard and battery powered, roughly the size and shape of a notepad or large book. • It was created by Kyocera and originally sold in Japan. However, the rights to the machine were purchased by Tandy Corporation and the computer was sold through Radio Shack stores. • It quickly become a popular computer for journalists. The built in telephone modem allowed users to write on location and sent their information quick.
HyperText Markup Language (HTML)December 1, 1990 • Time Berners Lee developed HTML. It was the beginning stages of the World Wide Web. • HTML is the main markup language for displaying web pages and other information that can be displayed in a web browser. • The HTML code led to the internet making information more open to people.
SmartPhone1992 • The first smartphone was the IBM Simon. It was designed in 1992 and shown as a concept product. • It was released to the public in 1993 and sold by Bellsouth. • It was a mobile phone that contained a calendar, address book, world clock, calculator, note pad, e-mail, send and receive faxes, and games. • It had no buttons, instead customers used a touchscreen to select different kinds of options for operations. • Text was entered with a unique on screen predictive keyboard.
Web 2.0January 1999 • Darcy DiNucci, a consultant on electronic information design, was the first to use the term “Web 2.0” in January 1999. • The Web 2.0 is viewed as a transport mechanism. • Web 2.0 contains different applications for storage, creation, and dissemination of information which were known before its arrival. • It has the capabilities of client and server side software or technology and the use of network protocols.
Smart Board2009 • In 2009, Smart Technologies introduced their first dual touch interactive whiteboard. • The Smart Board is an interactive whiteboard that uses touch detection for user input, in the same way a normal PC would. • A projector is used to display a computer’s video output on the interactive whiteboard, which then acts a s a large touch screen.
