Wedge Definition: An object with at least one slanting side ending in a sharp edge, 2 inclined planes put together How it helps make work easier: Cuts or spreads an object apart or fastens objects Examples: Doorstop, axe, thumbtack, knife, snowplow, chisel
Screw Definition: An inclined plane wrapped around a pole/cylinder How it makes work easier: Holds things together or lifts things Examples: Screw, propeller, fan, jar lid, drill
Wheel and Axle Definition: A wheel with a rod through its center, both parts move together How it makes work easier: Lifts or moves loads across distances Examples: Wagon wheel, doorknob, car, bike
Pulley Definition: Cable or rope wrapped around a grooved wheel. As the wheel rotates, the cord moves How it makes work easier: Helps lift things up and down or move them across Examples: Flagpole, clothesline, tow truck, crane
Lever Definition – A stiff bar that rests on a support called a fulcrum. It pivots (turns) against the fulcrum. There are 3 types, and the types is determined by where the fulcrum is. The types are 1st class, 2nd class, and 3rd class. How it makes work easier: It lifts and moves loads.
1st class Examples: seesaw, scissors, crowbar
2nd class lever Examples: wheelbarrow, nutcracker
3rd class lever Examples: broom, shovel, bat
