New January Homework

1. New January Homework Your child’s homework this month is to write! My goal for him/her is to be able to sit down and write one great sentence on his/her own. Before he/she can do that he/she will need a little extra support. I will continue to work on this in the classroom but I feel an extra push at home will really help him/her  How To Help at Home 1. Plan Talk to your child about what they’d like to write about. Keep him/her focused on a small moment like playing on the swings at the park rather than everything he/she did in a day. 2. Draw In class we focus on quick drawing rather than creating a masterpiece. Set a timer for 3 to 5 minutes for this part. 3. Prepare Once the 3 to 5 minutes of drawing is over, talk again about his/her small moment. Try to guide him/her to a good, not too long or complicated, sentence. Repeat the sentence several times. Have him/her say each word and hold up a finger for each word. It is also helpful to say each word while pointing to where each word will go on the paper. Write (have his ABC chart handy) Let’s say the sentence is I played on the swing set at the park. Have your child write each word and read the sentence from the beginning each time he/she writes a word. Have him/her write down the sounds he/she hears in words like played – he/she may write pad or plad or he/she may surprise you and write it playd or played. All of these examples are fantastic! If he/she asks how to spell a word ask him/her to say the word slowly and just write the sounds he/she hears. Remind him/her that a good sentence starts with a capital, the rest of the letters are mostly lowercase, has spaces between words, and ends with punctuation.
