Electrons and Ions (p. 37)(Date) Target: I know what an ion is and how to find the number of electrons.
Number of electrons is usually the same as the number of protons, unless the atom has a charge • Charged atoms are called ions • Atoms charge negative by gaining electrons, or they charge positive by losing electrons
Electron Arrangement in an Atom(74, half page) • (Copy Figure 2 on p. 227 with txt a, b, c)
Electrons are found in electron shells or energy levels, according to the period number • Atoms can only gain or lose electrons from the outermost shell • Electrons in the outermost shell are called valence electrons
Summary( p. 75): • (Write a 3 sentence summary, using the words “atomic number”, “electrons”, “ion”)
Practice: List the number of protons, neutrons and electrons (p. 56) • Fluorine- 19, atomic number 9: P __, N__, E__ • Lithium-7, atomic number 3 : P __, N__, E__ Use your periodic table: • Helium-4 : P __, N__, E__ • Calcium-41 : P __, N__, E__
