Introduction (continued) • The average child watches about 40,000 advertisements a year. • Advertisers spend between $15 billion to $17 billion dollars just advertising to children. • In return children 11 years of age or younger spend about $18 billion dollars per year; • 8-12 year olds influence their parents spending by $30 billion
Effects on Children’s Health • Out of the 40,000 commercials seen every year, about half of them are for food products. $2.5 Billion on advertising restaurants Combined Companies Spend $4.5 Billion $2 Billion on advertising food products
Continued • When children eat healthier and exercise regularly they tend to: • perform better in school • have a better self-image • manage stress and their emotions better • avoid low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety
Effects on Children Identity • The media plays a big role on how we find our identities as kids. • The way the media portrays women can lead to: • eating disorders • low self-esteem • many other problems
Continued • Children are more exposed to sex, tobacco, alcohol, and violence. • Children exposed to sexually content are more likely to have sex earlier on. • Tobacco companies spend about $11.2 billion a year on advertising. About $217 million goes to advertising in teen magazines. • Between 1997 and 1998 alcohol products appeared in 223 movies alone. • When a person reaches the age of 18, they have seen about 200,000 acts of violence.
