When • December 26th 1825 • On the day Nicholas I was crowned
Where • Senate Square in Saint Petersburg • Was renamed “Decembrist Square” in 1925 • Reverted back to Senate Square in 2008
What Happened • When the soldiers were asked to swear allegiance to Nicholas, about 3,000 refused and started demanding a constitutional government. Nicholas’s remaining loyal soldiers fired upon the rebels and were easily able to put down the rebellion.
The Aftermath • The Decembrists would be used as inspiration for future rebellions and attempted overthrows of the Tsar. • The leaders of the rebellion were arrested and executed. • Other rebels were exiled to Siberia
