WFPDB: The Bamberg Plate Archive Incorporation - Status November 2002 Milcho K. Tsvetkov Sofia Sky Archive DataCenter Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Bamberg, 11.11.2002 …. still not 11h :) Dr. Karl Remeis
I.WFPDB Project History • Developed as a project of the IAU WG WFI, started in 1991 at the IAU GA in Buenos Aires, Argentina: WG WFI Chairman Richard West • Supported by: - the Bulgarian NSF 1993, F-311,340... - AvH Stiftung (4 donations!) - RZ Muenster University (SHPC) • ESO and the IAU
WFPDB Project Goals • Main Directions: • Catalog of WFPA: 2x106 plates • Plate logs transformation • Search in WFPDB • Plate digitization directions • Relationship to other projects: Collaboration: CDS, ESO, IVO, UDAPAC, SVO, etc.
More Descriptions: Ask me at the address: milcho@skyarchive.org Website:http://www.skyarchive.org FOR MORE INFO...
Team/Resources • State assumptions about resources, allocated for this project as a unit of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences • people: 4As, 2PhD, 2St, 2Eng • equipment: SSADC, HPC, PDS, (UMAX) • locations: SOFIA, + virtual Go!ICQ • we support plate logs cataloging, database access, plate digitization, expert consultations, etc.
Competitive Analysis • Strengths • we have already cataloged and collected info for 1/3 of the existing WF plates; listed (practically) all existing ones; free internet access is provided via database search browser in Sofia and CDS • Weaknesses • low speed of progress, bad website updating, funding...
Competitive Analysis (cont.) • More weaknesses: - deadtime of the changes between generations: about 2 years each 4-5 years • Related activities: SSADC, BG AstroGrid, EC-COST national representation, European Week of ST since 1996, websiting Humboldt Union in Bulgaria, etc.
Schedule: 2002-2003 • 2002 Bamberg plate archive incorporation (“LMC” survey), previews • 2002 “Pleiades”: pilot project started • 2003 CWFPA version 5.0 • 2003 UMAX PL3000 flatbed scanners, involving in the plate digitization MORE!!! Complement of the WFPDB up to 100 000 plates - 50% from all!!
II. BAMBERG:- Current Status • History: 1st visit inDecember 1995 - Mr. R. Knigge’s introduction • Study visits in the 1998-2000: started plate logs cataloging in Sofia • 2001: Joint project preparation via AvH stiftung and DFG • 2002/03 AvH stay and start of the DFG project (2003-2005)
Dr. Remeis Observatory-Bamberg Photographic Patrol Sky Surveys • Northern Patrol Sky Survey - 1928/1939 (Ernostar A,B) - Tessar’s, Dogmar, Xenon and Small Schmidt: up to 1965 • Southern Patrol Sky Survey - Boyden: 1963-1970 (BAM010A-J) - Mnt. John: 1965-1976 (BAM010G-J) - San Miguel: 1969-1973 (BAM010K-N)
Northern Bamberg Photographic Patrol Sky Surveys • Northern Patrol Sky Survey - 1928/1939 as a program of P.Guthnick and directed by E. Zinner, • Telescopes: astrographs (1939/1956) • Observers: Ruegemer and Boehme • Total number of plates about 10000
Northern Bamberg Photographic Patrol Sky Surveys • Advantages: -All plates are available on site; period of monitoring 1928-1939; one type emulsion used (Matter); homogeneous; good plate conditions • Disadvantages:- no logs:but 6400 plates of Ernostar 1928-1939) are cataloged from the stacks during the visits in 2001 and 2002; other 4000 plates need cataloging; low limit 12-13pg; coma in plate field; • Cameras view now: • Emulsion used: Matter
Southern BambergPhotographic Patrol Sky Surveys • Field of priority for WFPDB team last years ! • History: Started as alternative and continuation of the BNSS in 1963. Initiators: K. Strohmeier, R. Knigge, etc. Program for southern variable star search, supported by DFG. • Equipment: 10 cameras (10/61 cm) were received from Baush&Lomb Ltd and completed as a multiple astrograph in the Bamberg workshop. • Later on 4 cameras were sent to New Zealand (Mt. John University observatory (Leo Tekapo) and another 4 cameras were used in San Miguel Station, Argentina
Southern BambergPhotographic Patrol Sky Surveys • Contains at the present statistics: - 22000 plates: 12567+1358 are already incorporated in the WFPDB • Advantages:Unique survey for 1963-1976; perfect log books; very accurate recording the time of observations (1minute); plates available on site in good conditions; plate preview (jpg 1MB/3.5 MB tiff) will be provided; further plate digitization on site will be organized, web access is now made (WFPDB) for 13 925 plates
Southern BambergPhotographic Patrol Sky Surveys • Unexpected delays and disadvantages: more than 6000 plates from New Zealand/Argentina survey out of the logs, need cataloging, used in 1963-64 not sensitive emulsion (Perutz), some mistakes in the logs and misplaced plates out of order; old emulsion used (in Argentina), comparatively not homogeneous - different limiting magnitude: from 10-11pg (1963) to 14-15pg in (1970)
Southern BambergPhotographic Patrol Sky Surveys • WFPDB team actions in 2002:- Start CCD preview imaging for each zone(RA/D) up to now was completed preview practically for all survey(-90,-77,-64,-51- 38,-25,-12 zones) 6 CD contain about 3000 preview images in JPG format (April and September-November) • Computer readable form for plate logs completed, proved and converted in the database format for 13000 plates! • First test access to the Database in Sofia realized successfully! • Visualization of the plate field was provided via SSADC-StarGazer routine!
Southern BambergPPSS:WFPDB team actions in 2002 Cont. • LMC survey from SBPPSS was selected and catalogued from all used telescopes and previews with CCD camera were made, including Mnt. John and San Miguel plates • BBW76 Fuor like object (12-13 pg) was studied on the Bamberg plates as an example for plate archive importance. • Discussions and arrangements about the DFG/ AvH Stuftung donations and joint project development was evaluated.
2003 actions • More previews needed for 1963-1964 because of the low limit • start with the preview of the ERNOSTAR • HAR025 (Metcalf 10”) plate preview will be made using the new scanner because of the plate size. • UMAX PL3000 Proflatbed scanner installation and start of test scans.
UMAX PL3000 Pro • 2001 search for suitable scanner • thanks the DFG such scanner will be provided for Bamberg in 2003 (April) • UMAX PL3000 Pro flatbed scanner • description
PLATE DIGITIZATIONin Bamberg • Each plate contains information - 250x2=500 MB (with 8 microns resolution) • Recording the scanned plates on DVD (8 plates on one DVD) • Start digitization of the LMC and Pleiades fields. • Preparation of a dataset of LMC fields and report at the IAU GA in Sidney
