  2. Last week • Means, SDs and z-scores problem sheet. • Deadline for coursework.

  3. Today • Looking at data from maths education questionnaire (week 2). • Hypotheses. • Levels of measurement. • Chi-Square problem sheet.

  4. Second Lab Report • Maths questionnaire (week 2). • Open data on Graham’s website “maths questionnaire SPSS data” • Which variables are categorical and which are continuous?

  5. 1 Hypothesis Can be either: • Continuous Hypothesis: • Should be tested with 2 continuous questions • e.g. “relationship between secondary school teacher kindness and maths anxiety ” • Categorical Hypothesis: - • Should be tested with 2 categorical questions • e.g. “association between gender and studying Psychology at A-level”

  6. Types of analysis • Continuous Hypothesis: • Inferential statistics: regression (week 9) correlation (week 10). • Categorical Hypothesis: - • Inferential statistics: Chi-Square test of association (today).

  7. Top Tip • Find past research whilst choosing hypothesis. • Hypothesis should be theoretically motivated. • Think about what analysis you want to do.
