Famous Couple John Lennon & Yoko Ono
John Lennon • John Winston Ono Lennon, (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English musician and singer-songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles, one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music.
Yoko Ono • Yoko Onois a Japanese artist, musician, author and peace activist, known for her work in avant-garde art, music and filmmaking as well as her marriage to John Lennon. Ono brought feminism to the forefront through her music which prefigured New Wave music (whether she was a direct influence is still debated). She is a supporter of gay rights and is known for her philanthropic contributions to the arts, peace and AIDS outreach programs.
How Did they met? • When John Lennon was invited by friend, John Dunbar, to an exhibit at Dunbar’s Indica Gallery in London on November 9, 1966, the intellectually hungry, emotionally restless 26-year-old Beatle reportedly thought the avant-garde show might involve drugs, an orgy, or any of the things that made swingin' London swing. In fact, what was happening at the Indica was a conceptual-art show called Unfinished Paintings and Objects, exhibiting the work of Yoko Ono, a 33-year-old Japanese artist who created things like transparent homes, imaginary music, and "underwear to make you high."
Yoko Ono and John Lennon The only thing they wanted was PEACE IN THE WORLD
PEACE It does not mean to be in a place where is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.
When did they married? • John and Yoko were married in Gibraltar on March 20th, 1969 dressed up in dazzling white. Just look at them! Yoko dons a white floppy hat and John sports a white corduroy jacket and white high-top tennis shoes. The Beatles' governor, Peter Brown, along with David Nutter, a photographer, were the only witnesses at the registry office. Seventy-five minutes after arriving in Gibraltar, the couple flies back to Paris, with the knot tied neatly.
Peace Love Happiness • You may say I’m a dreamerBut I’m not the only oneI hope someday you’ll join usAnd the world will be as one (John Lennon)
Why did so many people dislike John Lennon's relationship with Yoko Ono? • Xenophobia likely played a role along with Yoko's constant presence. She and John had a very intense relationship some psychologists might characterize as codependent. The cracks in the Lennon-McCartney songwriting partnership were there long before Yoko but her presence was seen as a contributing factor or the straw that broke the camel's back in the public eye. She could not win with that looming over her.
