Massac County Soccer Boosters Association SCHOLASTIC SOCCER FEASIBILITY STUDY MARCH 2009
Tonight’s Presentation • Brief and informational-only presentation. • Soccer Boosters have previously met & presented similar study findings with Superintendent’s Office. Meetings were positive and constructive. Agreed upon next step was to provide tonight’s presentation in order to inform the school board concerning our study results. • Our OBJECTIVE: Provide information and awareness of the opportunity/need to consider introducing soccer as a sport at the high school.
Massac County Soccer Boosters Association Who we are: • Formally organized in May 2008. • Our charter is to serve ALL soccer youth levels in the area. • Paramount goal in serving our charter is to promote the introduction and support of soccer as a school sport. MSBA members serving on the Scholastic Exploratory Committee: Troy Lawrence 564-2032 caritroy@verizon.net Tim Lawson 534-8417 tlhgm@comcast.net Tim Bellamey 638-2557 bellamey@comcast.net
Player Interest: HS Survey Results conducted in Fall 2008 83 GIRLS indicated they would participate in soccer if offered. 54 BOYS indicated they would participate in soccer if offered. Pre-High School Interest Levels: • Community recreational participation is high – anticipate interest levels to increase further at the HS level in the upcoming years. • Several competitive teams from the community have been formed – 1st large group of these competitive players entering HS next year.
Field Construction: • New community soccer complex is being constructed by the City of Metropolis on North Metropolis Street. • Designed with multiple-sized fields to serve ALL soccer play from ages 4 to High School. • Soccer complex will cover over 20 acres. • Include into the design: Two regulation-sized HS fields are available to serve as both practice and game fields for the school. • Soccer fields ready for players by SPRING 2010.
Survey Results on Scheduling: • Massac Co. would be a Illinois Class “A” soccer program. • For IL High School: Boys play in the FALL, Girls play in SPRING. • Nearest Illinois Class “A” competition: AJ & Harrisburg. • For potential Boys scheduling: would likely schedule a mix of Illinois Class “A” & near-by Kentucky schools. • For potential Girls scheduling: would likely schedule mostly Illinois schools & supplement with some Missouri schools.
Program Funding Survey Results: • Possible annual expenses for both Boys & Girls programs together approx. $26.0k • Possible 1st year additional expenses for both programs together approx. $8.5k The Massac Co. Soccer Boosters are willing to work with the school on any and all proposals in order to secure necessary funding for these new programs.
Survey Results concerning potential impact on other sports and the community: • Soccer and other sports can co-exist and thrive at a school of similar size of Massac. (Prime example: just look at AJ & Harrisburg, they’ve been doing it for 5 years). • Possible impact on numbers on other sports, could be possibly addressed by dual-sport participation such as soccer/cross-country. • With introducing soccer, the availability of the sport at the school level could serve to help attract new families who will be considering moving into the school district in the future.
Conclusion: • Got the field under construction, demonstrated student interest, booster club as a resource, teams ready to play Massac HS…is the next step to make this opportunity a reality? • Our hope is to see soccer as sport starting in the 2010-11 school year. • We’re available any place, any time to answer questions, provide additional information, work on proposed ideas, etc.. Just let us know, how we may be able to help. • THANKS for your time & consideration of this positive opportunity that is available for both the school and the community.
