  1. Welcome to 8th Grade Language Arts I am so glad you are here! -Mrs. Hartung-

  2. Course Description The eighth grade language arts curriculum is a rigorous blend of literature, writing, and oral communication. Students will read and write across various genres as well as utilize essential listening and speaking skills through a variety of class activities.

  3. Five Domains of Focus • Reading – Literary Texts • Reading – Informational Texts • Writing • Language (Grammar /Conventions) • Speaking / Listening

  4. Writing Focus • The Middle Grades Writing Assessment will be administered in January. Students will be working diligently to increase their writing skillsby actively engaging in narrative writing; argumentative, informational and explanatory analysis; research; as well as routine writing throughout the year.

  5. Writing Shift • Students will be reading and responding to both literary and informational texts. There will be a strong emphasis on using textual evidence to back up claims and arguments.

  6. Reading Focus • Students WILL be continuing High Bar in eighth grade. • Requirement: 10 credits total (5 per semester) • Students must select books in appropriate lexile range.

  7. Reading Focus, continued… • Students will be doing an increased amount of non-fiction reading in and outside of the classroom. • Students will be reading To Kill a Mockingbird in the second semester.

  8. Students will be able to: • Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. • Write informative / explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information. • Write narratives using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.

  9. Students will be able to: • Produce clear and coherent writing in the development, organization and style appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. • Research to build knowledge • Cite textual evidence that strongly supports an analysis of text both stated and inferred. • Determine theme and central ideas.

  10. Students will be able to: • Use varying text structures to construct meaning. • Determine the meaning of words and phrases including figurative, connotative, and technical meaning. • Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text and assess reasoning.

  11. Suggested Supplies(available on the team flyer) • 1 hard cover Composition Notebook • 1 Binder and 5 tab dividers • Lots and lots of Notebook paper • Pencils, pencils, and more pencils • Erasers • Pencil Sharpener - with collection compartment • Pens (blue/black ink only) and at least one highlighter (preferably yellow) • Personal copy of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

  12. Grading Policy • Reading 25% • Writing 25% • Language 25% • Listening/Speaking 10% • Final Exam 15%

  13. Time Outside of Class • Students cannot expect to accomplish mastery without spending time “practicing” outside of class. This includes both reading and writing. • Complete classwork/homework • Review notes and assignments • Stay organized • Reflect on personal growth

  14. Get to know me…. • This is my seventh year teaching language arts. • I have been working with students in different capacities for many years. (The number is too big to write here!) • I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else!

  15. Get to know me…. • I have lived in Locust Grove for 13 years. • I have been married to what I like to call “my boyfriend” for over 25 years. My favorite thing about him is that me makes me laugh – all the time. • I have two grown daughters who like to keep me updated on technology and fashion.

  16. Get to know me…. • Proud owner of one spoiled kitty and feeder of neighbor’s dog. (Can’t help it…she’s too cute!) • I am afraid of bats. Snakes don’t bother me at all. • I love to laugh, even at myself. It makes life more enjoyable.

  18. What I did this summer (while it rained. Continuously.) • Traveled twice to Austin, Texas to visit my daughter at camp. • First time ever to Texas. • Saw a roadrunner for the first time.

  19. What I did this summer (while it rained. Continuously.) • Traveled to South Dakota and Wyoming • Visited Mt. Rushmore • The Devil’s Tower • The Badlands • ….and Crazyhorse Memorial.

  20. And finally, • It is my desire that each student has a meaningful and enjoyable experience in 8th grade language arts. • Please feel free to contact me (by email if possible) at any time with any questions and/or concerns you may have about your student’s academic progress in language arts. • Let the new year begin!
