AN INVESTIGATION OF E-WASTE MANAGEMENT IN THE PERTH METROPOLITAN AREA Gordon Richard Weldt Supervisor- Dr. Faisal Anwar
What is E-waste? • Electronic waste • Includes electronics discarded due to • Reaching it’s End of Life • Becoming Obsolete
Why is E-waste an issue? • Complex compositions of materials within the waste • High cost to recycle • Toxic heavy metals and flame retardants in e-waste • Landfill environments are acidic, causing the toxins to dissolve and leach into the ground. • Exponential growth in E-waste
Objectives • Perth’s Domestic E-waste Cycle • Background Research • Life Cycle Analysis • Public Survey • Effectiveness of current and upcoming waste management systems
Background Research • City Councils • Local E-waste Companies • Local Landfills • Current and Upcoming Laws and Regulations
Perth Based E-waste Companies • Total Green Recycling • 1800 e-waste • SIMS Recycling Solutions
E-waste in Perth Landfills • Acidic Environment leading to toxic leachates • Class 2,3 lined landfills • Predetermined quota of hazardous substances • 7 of 19 landfills in Perth are not capable of handling e-waste • Henderson Waste Recovery Park • Current system screens domestic waste • Does not screen skip bins • All screened e-waste is processed at the cost of the local government • Class 2,3 landfill
Flow of E-waste in Perth E-waste Disposed of in… Verge Collection Yellow Topped Recycling Bin Skip Bin Green Topped Waste Bin Rejected by Recycling Plant Sent to a Controlled Landfill Private E-waste Processing Facility Sent to an Uncontrolled Landfill Landfill
Current and Upcoming Policies and Regulations • Australian Hazardous Waste Act 1989 • National Waste Policy • National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme • Regional areas by end of 2013 • Yet to be Implemented in Perth
Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) • LCD vs CRT • Purpose • Comparison of older an newer generation displays • Effect of disposing e-waste in landfills • Scope • 17”CRT monitors and 15”LCD monitors • Impacts to Perth Metropolitan area
LCA Scope Electricity Use of E-waste Management Services/Facilities Electricity CO2 and NOx Emissions Monitor Use Use of Landfills for Disposal CO2 and NOx Emissions Toxic Leachates including Lead and Mercury
Emissions Over Product Use • Power consumption over life span of product • Kwinana and Cockburn 1 and 2 • Nox and CO2 Emissions
Emissions in Landfill • Lead • CRT glass panels • Component of Solder • Mercury • CCFL
Emissions Resulting From the Processing of E-waste • Only dismantling takes place in Perth
Processing of E-waste vs. Landfill Disposal • Pollutants resulting from e-waste processing facility can be offset by renewable energy sources • Non-renewable resources including precious metals can be extracted • Landfill disposal can have a potentially devastating effect on the local health and ecology
LCD vs. CRT • LCD displays superior in every aspect • Less Lead in LCD’s • Smaller and more efficient printed circuit boards architecture • Less power consumption
E-waste Survey • Fully online multi-choice • Two months • Seven questions • Location • Age Group • Predisposition towards the protection of the local environment • Method of disposal used for e-waste • Financial burden • Expect to get financial remuneration • Willing to pay for the safe processing of e-waste • Distance willing to travel if a free collection was made available
Processing of collected data • Participants from outside the WA region were excluded • Illogical entries were filtered out • Lack of a spread of results among the age groups • Relatively small number of survey participants (168)
Findings • Current system is relatively effective at coping with the domestic e–waste • Landfill usage considerable more damaging to the environment • more comprehensive e-waste filtration system required to prevent unaccounted e-waste entering landfills • NTCRS will be effective given that the general public are made aware of the free service
