What Have We Learned? • Equity and Equal are not the same • Different students and schools have different challenges and needs • Equity and fairness require understanding and addressing these differences • One size does not fit all!!!
Definition of Equity Equity assures full access to opportunities for each MMSD student, resulting in educational excellence and social responsibility.
What Does Equity Look Like? • Excellence – When all students achieve • Quality – All schools will be equally desirable • Leadership – Guidance and support for student success • Accountability – Making sure policies and practices are fair • Resources – Distribute to meet student needs
Achieving Equity… • Adequate funding • Resources based on student needs • High student expectations • Open access to rigorous curriculum • Teacher support so all students succeed • Welcoming school climate for all students, families and community members
What’s Next? • Discuss Board/community feedback • Make changes to recommendations • Present to the Board of Education • Adopt new policy in 2007 • Achieve equity!!!
