Brief history of PSTI 1972: Government of India established Load Despatch Training Institute at Bangalore for planning and managing large regional power grids 1975: renamed as Power Systems Training Institute (PSTI) to cover other facets of power system operation also W.e.f April, 2002 PSTI is merged with NPTI
Power Systems Training Institute • Power Systems Training Institute (PSTI) is the Power system wing of NPTI. • It is a self-contained Institute with office, laboratories, library, hostel, canteen and staff quarters spread over in a campus of around 18 acres. • The campus is strategically located in Banashankari 2nd Stage, very close to the famous Banashankari Temple.
Power Systems Training Institute • PSTI is involved in training of practicing Power Sector engineers in Power System Planning, Design, Operation, Maintenance, Control, Protection, Testing, Simulation and Dispatcher functions.
PSTI: Faculty for the training • Apart from the in house faculty, training is also imparted through the faculty drawn from among practicing engineers of reputed R&D Institutes like IISc, CPRI and organizations like Power Grid, KPTCL, NTPC, NHPC, PR&DC, BSNL, NPCIL and manufacturers like ABB, Areva T&D, Easun Reyrolle, Conzerv, etc.

PSTI: Long Term Training • The overall efficiency of the power sector depends on the performance of the T&D system. • Focus is on efficiency enhancement of Transmission and Distribution Sector due to deregulation and liberalization introduced in to the Indian Power sector. • An appreciable deficiency in this T&D sector of well-trained engineers. • No formal studies in educational institutions can equip the budding engineers with knowledge of different inputs required for job performance in the power sector.
PSTI: Long Term Training • Keeping this in view, and to make professionally trained manpower available to the Power Industry, PSTI, Bangalore is regularly conducting a 26-week certificate course on “Operation & Maintenance in T&D Systems”. • The syllabus includes the requirements of an engineer for Operation & Maintenance of Transmission and Distribution Systems as per IE Rules {rule 3(2B)}.

Long Term Training Methodology The instruction and training methodology also includes • Power system studies lab to study the power flow, fault analysis, stability and relay co-ordination aspects of utilities across India. • Relay testing lab to train in testing of electromechanical, static and Numerical relays. • High Voltage Lab to train the engineers in High Voltage Testing of Power System Equipment • Instrumentation Lab to train the engineers on handling various test equipments and carry on various tests using Test and Measuring Instruments • Hot line training to train in the field of hot line maintenance of commercial lines
Long Term Trainees • The engineers trained at PSTI are the apt and ready manpower for Operation, Maintenance, Testing & Commissioning of Transmission & Distribution lines, Transformers, Motors, LT/HT Switchgears, MV/HV panels, Relays, Capacitors, Cables, System Planning and consultancy etc. • The engineers successfully completing the O&M in T&D Systems program are highly competent to carry out all works such as design, engineering, erection, operation, maintenance etc. connected with the electrical installations in generating stations, process industries, consultancy organizations etc.
Long Term Trainees: Placement • On successful completion of this course the trainees have been recruited by reputed organizations like ABB, L&T, Adani Power, Reliance Energy, Tata Power(NDPL), KEC International, Kalpataru Power, Essar Power, PRDC, Easun Reyrolle, Suzlon, Jyothi Structures, Vedanta, Abhijeet Group, Enercon, Consulting Engineering Services etc.
PSTI: Medium Term Training • PSTI also enters into agreements with various organizations and conducts customized programs for their employees. • Some of the organizations for which the customized programs have been conducted include Powergrid, BHEL, Reliance Energy, Schneider Electric, etc. • Some of the customized programs have been conducted on-site for the benefit of client organizations like NTPC, KSEB, EMCO, Tatapower, BEL, Infosys, etc.
Power Systems Training Institute: Overseas Assignments • PSTI in its various courses has trained many foreign nationals from Bhutan, Afghanistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Nigeria etc. • NPTI is also associated with the Capacity Building Program of Afghan Power Utility engineers and has conducted an on-site course at Kabul and an On-Job-Training course at Bangalore during 2008. • Programs conducted for these nationals have received exceptionally encouraging feedback with rave reviews.
