Organisationl Structures E-Portfolio
newSplash studio can be seen to have an organic organisational structure within its business unit • There is no clear leader/manger in the business unit • Employees are able to share and express ideas
Organic Organisation Structure • Employees are often found working in groups and share input on tasks. • There is also more face-to-face time with each other and no real sense of hierarchy of power. • Typically have a more open communication and contribution to tasks at hand. • The structure of the business is more adaptable and flexible to changes. The environment is unpredictable but because of the freedom afforded the employees and management it is better maintained
Advantages • They have a flexible approach to the continually changing financial and customer environment. They can be very responsive and quick to make changes • Staff structures are also very fluid, with wide ranging job descriptions. They cope better with unstable environments • The employees are very much involved in decision making and problem solving; this enhances motivation, commitment and gives a variety of perspectives. • The ease of ability or change enables organic organizations to be more creative and imaginative
Disadvantages • Although flexibility is a positive factor, it can also be a negative as it can cause uncertainty and instability • Staff may not be sure about their specific job role and personal responsibilities, this may cause confusion and result in certain jobs not getting done • Decisions may be vague or ambiguous due to the flexibility • Often communication issues can arise if not firmly controlled
Matrix Organisation Structure • The matrix organizational structure divides authority both by functional area and by project. • In a matrix structure, each employee answers to two immediate supervisors: a functional supervisor and a project supervisor. • The functional supervisor is charged with overseeing employees in a functional area such as marketing or engineering. Project supervisors manage a specific and often impermanent project. • They absorb employees from various functional areas to complete their project teams. This kind of organizational structure has several advantages.
Advantages • Creates more of a horizontal structure • Allows a quicker spread of information across all boundaries • Increases individual knowledge • Gives members a chance to be chosen for their skills according to project needs • Maximises strengths and minimises weaknesses
Disadvantages • Chain of command is very complex • Differentiation between Functional Manager and Project Manager confuses team members • Higher ratio of managers to employees which can create opposing loyalties from employees
