Looking Back • What “life changes” did you experience this year? • Did you have some good changes and some sad ones? • How have you changed physically, financially, socially, emotionally, and spiritually? • What would you like to carry from 2013 into 2014? • What would you like to leave behind?

  3. The Premise • Our life is always changing. • No good moments last forever and neither do the bad ones. • “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 • God is our constant in a life of change. • God will direct us through any stage of life.

  4. The Life of David • Looking at the life of David shows us God’s connection during the highs and lows of life. • David’s life is well recorded in scripture: 1 Samuel 16 – 2 Samuel 23 • We know his father (Jesse) but not his mother. • He was a shepherd in his youth. • At about 20 he was anointed to be king, played harp for King Saul, and defeated Goliath.

David’s Life Changes • David now becomes a warrior and Saul becomes jealous (1 Samuel 18:9). • Saul then begins to try to kill David and hunts him for many years. • Many of the Psalms are from this time in David’s life. God never left him. • 1 Samuel ends with the death of Saul. • 2 Samuel 2 records David being anointed King over Judah. • Do you see God at work in your life during opposition and difficulty?

David’s Life Changes • In 2 Samuel 5 David becomes king over Israel and conquers Jerusalem. • David continues to have success in battle (2 Samuel 8) but is losing connection with his family. • David plans the temple but Solomon will build it. • 2 Samuel 11-12 David is not at war and lusts after Bathsheba and commits multiple sins to cover it up. • When have you been at your most vulnerable and what led to it?

David’s Life Changes • 2 Samuel 15 David flees from his own son Absalom. • 2 Samuel 22:2-3 • “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my saviour – from violent men you save me. I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.” • David learned to lean on God and count on Him through life’s changes – how are you doing at learning the same thing?

  9. 2014 • We may not be able to guess all of the changes that will happen this year. • We know some will be much better than we thought, and that others may bring great difficulties, but God will be unchanging. • God is also not bound by time so He is already there! • This year be ready for the changes in life by connecting to Jesus who is unchanging.
