  5. Values • RURAL: • Traditional spirit of America • Hardworking, self-reliant, religious, independent • URBAN: • Threatened those values because of change

  6. KKK • Grew Dramatically during the 1920s • Used violent tactics • Made up of farmers and small business owners in rural areas • Targeted African Americans, immigrants, Jews, Catholics

  7. Fundamentalism • Literal interpretation of the Bible • Strong support in the South • Prominent Leaders: Billy Sunday and Aimee Semple McPherson • Rejected Darwin’s Ideas of Evolution

  8. Scopes Trial • Several States banned the teachings of Darwin in Public Schools, including Tennessee • John Scopes (high school teacher) went against the law to teach it • He was arrested

  9. Scopes Trial: The players • William Jennings Bryan: prosecutor • Evolution goes against Christianity • Clarence Darrow: defense attorney • Freedom of speech Law remained intact until 1960s Scopes was found guilty and fined $100
