2. Objectives (as stated in Annex 1 of EU/UC contract) Academic: to • Serve as a National Centre of Academic Excellence andExpertise on Europe; • Enhance research on Europe and the EU by supporting publications, organising conferences, workshops and media coverage of events; • Enhance research on Europe and the EU by providing post-graduate scholarships, visiting fellowships; • Develop exchange programmes with European and regional European Institutes; • Produce a new generation of post-graduate scholars informed about European issues; • Instigate a "European-in-residence" programme for leading practitioners; • Extend and develop the study of the EU within NZ universities; • Examine NZ’s relationship with the EU and its Member States as a well as other countries in Europe, especially the countries seeking EU membership

Objectives (as stated in Annex 1 of EU/UC contract ) Outreach: to • Raise awareness and knowledge of the European integration process and its global implications at both the elite and at the mass level • Locate New Zealand European researchers in a global context • Provide www-based point of contact for EU issues in New Zealand • Establish an information network linking the Centre to other Institutions • Develop a policy advice capacity for government and private sector organizations • Promote an annual Europa Lecture by a leading EU figure • Inform the NZ media on EU issues and promote closer EU-NZ relations • Provide a counter-weight to New Zealand’s Asia-Pacific identity
