Character Creation Tips • Don't start your character off with a name or a physical description • Develop your character by giving him a problem, dramatic need, or compulsion • Don't rely on crutches • Empathize with your character • Don't sympathize with your characters • Write from your own life

Character Creation Exercise • Figure out what genre you want to write for • Decide if you want to create a protagonist (hero) or antagonist (villain) • Determine whether the character is male or female, and the approximate age • Create a list of wants or goals for your character • Make a list of likes and dislikes, and make sure the list is balanced • Add to this a list of quirks, good habits, bad habits, or just things the character can't stop doing without some serious discipline or counseling • Work on external features such as where he/she lives, what he/she looks like and whether or not he/she has any pets, etc • Work out their fears, motivations, and biggest secrets • Take mannerisms and features from people around you
