Welcome to Middle School We are preparing your child for a successful future. We emphasize personal responsibility as they enter this new phase of their life. We are guiding them through making positive choices, problem solving and acquiring life skills. Science - Amplify Science Curriculum following NGSS -Next Generation Science Standards Grade is based on: Lab work/classwork: 45% Assessments/Projects 45% Homework: 10% +=100%, √+=90%, √=75%,√- 65% • Each Unit starts with a Phenomena to ignite thinking • Focuses on a unit question to be explored throughout the unit • 3 units related to life science • 1 unit introduction to chemistry • 2 units relates to weather and climate • 2 “Engineer Internships” incorporating science and engineering practices
Social Studies and Humanities Each teacher is responsible for leading one group for Social Studies class. • This is 30 minutes Monday - Thursday, with Friday being blocked for Fun Friday • In Social Studies students will be working on • Humanities assignments that require extra time • Scholastic News - current events magazine • CNN Student News - daily news events • Starting second quarter, Ms. Stanis will be working with students on Success Bound activities related to being successful in Middle School and starting to set goals for high school Mr. Strawinski leads the Humanities classes that will continue the study of Ancient Civilizations • Mrs. Hehn co-teaches in class once a week • Mrs. Hehn will communicate with the other teachers when extra time is needed for Humanities assignments
Connected Math Program Focus of each lesson is to have students explore real life problems to find their own solution and learn other strategies from classmates. Work in small groups and partners. Notes are very important since the textbook has very few examples in it. Unit outline provides what we are learning, vocabulary words, and color coded/differentiated homework. Classwork and ACE Homework: √+(A: 95%),√ (C: 75%),√- (D: 65%) Grade is based on: 50% Assessments, 30% Classwork, 10% Homework, and 10% Participation Khan Academy is a great resource for help with homework
Connected Math Program Cont. In Math weekly, Tuesday: Khan Academy due (Wednesday-Tuesday: One hour and one week to complete) Thursday: Turn It In Thursday due (given on Friday: One week to complete) Friday: Most Friday’s will have either a test or quiz. [Basic Skills Quiz: 20 points or CMP3 Test: 100 points]
Homework policy School homework policy is followed Homework is posted on whiteboard daily and should be written in homework planner. We do check this as a routine at the beginning of the year. Unexcused late work is due the following day for 50% off final grade. Students are expected to turn in a signed pink slip. Students can get a grade of 65% with a signed pink slip as an incentive for honest communication with their parents.
Pink Slips Each time a student misses a homework assignment they must fill out a pink slip. One part stays with the teacher. The other part is to go home, be signed by a parent, and returned to school the next day. It is the child’s responsibility to get the slip signed and returned. We will follow up with the parent if a pattern forms, but we really want the students to take ownership of their responsibilities An assignment returned with a signed pink slip will earn a grade of 65% rather than the late 50%
Discipline Pyramid ●Per quarter, students will progressively receive three strikes, then two, then one before attending a skill building session, depending on the SCC violation. ●If a student continues to engage in a targeted behavior, the student will be assigned a Restorative Conference, a more progressive pyramid may be used and the Chicago Public Schools Student Code of Conduct will be followed. ● The progressive pyramid is a visual tool for students, parents and teachers to utilize in tracking targeted behaviors to decrease repeated offenses.
Bathroom We highly encourage students to use the bathroom without disrupting classroom instruction. We using the students’ assignment notebook (planners) to assist in this routine and also to teach some responsibility. Students will use the current week in the assignment notebook to track when they go to the bathroom. They also have the morning, lunch, and recess time to use the bathroom without passes. No child is denied use of the bathroom. We are flexible and aware some students may need more often and we work with these students individually.
PBIS School wide we have implemented a Positive Behavior Intervention System where positive choices and actions are rewarded and encouraged, while negative behaviors are corrected with interventions. PAWS tickets - Issued to any student by any staff member. Used to purchase items in the Bulldog Bazaar. Success links – Earned by classes “caught” being good. Rewarded with the “Golden Bulldog” for receiving the most links. Bulldog Bazaar – Specific dates for students to purchase items at the school store. NEW for middle school -Golden Bulldog Card - Bonus rewards in class, quarterly incentives, Gold card events
Summer School Promotion Policy 3rd, 6th, and 8th grades are considered the Bridge years for Summer school. • Students who received an F in Reading or Math attended summer school. • Students who did not score above 11% on the Spring NWEA Tests in Reading and/or Math attended summer school • Students that scored between 12-24%, and received a D in Math or Reading attended summer school. Please be aware the NWEA test questions and content change at the middle school level.
