Catholic Reformation • Although many people moved to the Protestant religions, millions stayed with the Catholic Church. • The Catholic Church made a few changes in order to make sure people stayed Catholic – known as the Catholic Reformation • Ignatius of Loyola: • Grew up in Loyola, Spain • Was injured in a war – while recovering he thought about his sins and his beliefs • Believed that he cleansed his soul by focusing on his past and beliefs • Wrote Spiritual Excercises
Catholic Reformation • Jesuits: • Group formed by Ignatius Loyola • Focused on 3 activities: • Establish schools • Convert non-christians • Stop the growth of Protestant religions • Two Popes reform the Catholic Church • Pope Paul III: • Investigated the sales of indulgences • Okayed the formation of the Jesuits • Used the inquisition to root out enemies of the Church • Called the Council of Trent
Catholic Reformation • Council of Trent (1545-1549): • Church was the ultimate authority of the Bible – not the people • Need good deeds AND faith for salvation • Bible and tradition were equally important • Indulgences were valid, but the false selling was illegal • Pope Paul IV: • Index of Forbidden Books • Burned offensive books – Protestant Bibles
