Humanism • Humanism was based on the study of the classics… Greek and Roman… • Humanist studied grammar, rhetoric, poetry, moral philosophy, and history (humanities) • Petrarch is known as the father of humanism • Humanist had very active civic lives, meaning that they were heavily involved in political roles

  3. Vernacular Literature • Humanist used pure Latin. Some writers however wrote in vernacular… vernacular just means the language that they speak in their own region • Two of the most well known vernacular writers were the Italian author Dante and the English author Geoffrey Chaucer (from a Knights Tale) • Dante’s masterpiece is known as the Divine Comedy while Chaucer is known for his work The Canterbury Tales • In the Canterbury Tales, Chaucer describes the journeys and encounters of 29 different people who are taking a pilgrimage to visit the tomb of Saint Thomas Becket (the man King Henry II had murdered)

Renaissance Education • Renaissance humanist believed that education could have a massive impact on humans • They studied liberal arts believing that those courses would lead them to their full potential • These liberal arts included: History, Moral Philosophy, eloquence/rhetoric, grammar/logic, poetry, mathematics, astronomy, music and physical education

Art • Renaissance artists wanted their art to appear very realistic and life like… (much like the sculptors of Rome) • Frescoes by Masaccio are the first masterpieces of the early Renaissance • A fresco is a painting done on fresh, wet plaster with water based paints • Where medieval paintings look flat and semi-dull, Masaccio’s paintings are dimensional and come alive

  6. Art Continued… • There are three names that are synonymous with the Renaissance… they are Leonardo da Vinci… Raphael… and Michelangelo • Da Vinci- Mastered the art of realistic painting and focused on the human body/how it worked • Raphael- known for his Madonna's (paintings of the virgin Mary) • Michelangelo- Paintings of the Sistine Chapel in Rome
