  2. Launch: • Please pick up one sheet from the grey bin and fill out the top • Name, Date, Class, &PAGE – GO 4 • Be prepared to answer, “What geographic features did you observe over the weekend?”

  3. ARCHIPELAGO • A large group or chain of islands

  4. BAY • Part of a body of water that reaches into the land.

  5. BUTTE • An isolated hill or small plateau with steep sides

  6. CANAL • a long narrow section, filled with water, created by people so that boats/goods could pass through it

  7. CANYON • A deep, narrow valley with steep sides

  8. CAPE • Point of land that extends into a river, lake, or ocean

  9. CHANNEL • A deep, narrow body of water connecting 2 larger bodies of water • The deeper part of a waterway

  10. CLIFF • Steep, high wall of rock, Earth, or ice

  11. DELTA • Land built up at the mouth of a river

  24. MESA • A flat-topped hill or small plateau with steep sides

  25. MOUNTAIN • High, rocky land usually with steep sides and a pointed or rounded top. • Two types: Faulted Folded

  26. FAULTED MOUNTAINS • Formed by a break in the earth’s crust FOLDED MOUNTAINS • Formed when tectonic plates push against each other and squeeze up the crust of the earth

  30. PENINSULA • Body of land jetting into a lake, sea, or ocean, surrounded on three sides by water

  31. PLAIN • A region which is mostly level, low land with gently rolling hills

  32. PLATEAU • a large flat area of land that is higher than other areas of land that surround it

  33. RIVER • Large stream of water that flows through the land

  34. RIVER BASIN • Land drained by a river and its branches

  35. SEA • A large body of water partly or surrounded/enclosed by land

  36. SOURCE • The place where a river begins

  37. STRAIT • a narrow passage of water connecting two seas or two large areas of water

  38. STREAM and (Creek) • Stream - a natural flow of water that is smaller than a river • Creek – a small stream

  39. TIMBERLINE • A point on a mountain above which trees cannot grow. timberline

  40. TRIBUTARY • A small stream of water that flows through the land feeding into a river

  41. Valley • Low land between hills or mountains

  42. VOLCANO • A mountain formed of rock thrown up from inside the earth. • 4 types: extinct, dormant, intermittent, and active

  43. WATERFALL • a place where water flows over a vertical drop in the course of a stream or river.
