GCT Progress (19-Sep:11-Oct 06) • Brief status of the GCT hardware • Progress since the last trigger meeting (19/9/06) CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 1
Source Card Status I • 8 Source Cards have been delivered to Imperial and are currently under test. • John and Andrew will be here during the last week of October to: (a) Setup for the Leaf-Source Integration (b) Install the RCT readout. • USB readout software ready for reading RCT (old news). • Readout PC inherited from the old project. 10 at hand CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 2
Source Card Status II • Have enough parts to build 52 source Cards. Requested quotes for additional source Card parts (enough for 12 Source Cards more). • Electron and Jet triggers require 64 Source cards. • If the muon data are also included we need 72 Source Cards. • 72 Source Cards will be build by Dec. 06; • Need to order the RCT to GCT cables soon (108 of them). • One Source-to-Leaf link was installed. The Links will be 12 m long (not 20m as originally thought). • All optical links will be ordered very soon. CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 3
Leaf Card Testing Oct. 06 • Past tests: • JTAG • USB • Clocks • TTC • VME • Over the past few weeks Matt has been testing the Multi Gigabit Transceivers (MGTs). The MGTs receive serial data from the 12 channel optical transmitters. • The test is done using the local on-board loop back of the VIRTEX-II Pro. • It tests how well the MGTs are powered and if there is any problem with the power these tests are bound to fail. • Each VIRTEX-II Pro has 16 MGTs and each Leaf has 32. CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 4
Leaf Card continued… • For these tests data patterns are looped through the MGTs and a CRC is computed each time to test the data integrity. If the CRCs do not match the program stops and you know that an error has occurred. • All 16 MGTs from one Virtex-II Pro have now been tested and work. Matt will continue testing the rest. • John and Andrew will bring then the Source Card to do the integration tests. They will of course start with one fibre and they will escalate up to 32 channels. • We plan to build 16 Leaf Cards all together (8 are needed for all electron and jet triggers) • An order for 16 Virtex-II Pro parts is about to go out (32 are needed all together) CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 5
Concentrator + Wheel Card • The Concentrator Card should be delivered to CERN within a couple of days. • The GT-Link card is at CERN layout and should go to production at the end of October. • The Wheel Card Layout is finished and we decided to wait for the Leaf Concentrator Integration first. CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 6
The Concentrator Card I • Arrived yesterday afternoon … CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 7
The Concentrator + Leaf Cards • One Leaf mounted on it … CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 8
RCT to GCT Optical Links • Understanding of the optical link data transmission and margins was raised during the May 06 GCT ESR • The problem raised is shown to the right: • One has to vary the power of the transmitter using an attenuator and measure BER. However the required attenuator was missing and was delivered later. • Andrew Rose performed tests in July and October 06 and the following is a summary of his work (assisted by the CMS Opto-Electr. Group. CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 9
Optical Links Tests: July 06 Copper Output OK Optical Output (scope) • The left plot is an eye diagram taken using a scope driven by a Source Card optical driver. In blue are the prohibited by spec. regions. • The right plot is the ‘copper’ output after it goes through a ‘Leaf Card’ receiver. CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 10
Attenuator MPO terminated fibres Source Card Patch panel SFP LC terminated fibres SFP Snap-12 evaluation board SFP evaluation board Copper link October 06 Optical Link Tests October 06 Setup • He used the attenuator and the Snap-12 + SFP evaluation cards connected to the receiver on the Source Card (emulating a Leaf to measure BER for different settings of the attenuator and different SFPS • Showed some batch-batch variation in snap-12 receivers. • For worse batch, errors started to appeared with attenuation of 16.75dB and ‘edge’ appeared at 17.3dB. • Channel to channel variation was limited (std. dev ~ 0.2dB in point where BER went above ~10-9) CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Stated RX Operating limit Stated TX Operating limit Available for connectors Very Preliminary: Andrew Perhaps we are safe ? Need to do more ? CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 12
Other Link Issues • The Maximum Length between the Source Cards and the Patch Panel (installed directly above the GCT crate) is 12 m. • The length of the TTC Fibres from the TTC crate to the Source Card crates have also been measured to be 15 m. • We are in the process of ordering them. CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 13
Online and Test Software • The Concentrator Card Software: Low-Level software and the user interface, written in python, have been debugged and fully tested using a TTCvi emulating the concentrator VME interface. • Rob Frazer is now integrating this with the latest version of the trigger supervisor. • Rob is coming to CERN on the 23.10.06 and he will be at CERN for 3 days a week from then on till the concentrator is in working order… CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 14
Emulator Software • GCT emulator is ready to be released for public use in CMSSW version 1_2_0 next week. • It has been tested as well as we could considering that our input data seems faulty and has been like this for sometime now. • Magnus is re-writing his jet finder code for Virtex-II Pro and we need to have some Monte Carlo feedback on several issues. I had hoped that this would be possible before we spend 50 K$ for FPGAs CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 15
Monitoring Software • Monitoring package is ready for public use, and will go in 1_2_0 as well (tested with patterns). • However for the moment several things are incorrect in the input data stream: single pions (-4.8 < eta < -3) with 1_1_0_pre2 b-jets with 0_9_2 b-jets with 1_1_0_pre2 Junk Junk No HF Jets We cannot go on like this !! CMS September Trigger Meeting 12/10/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 16
Summary and Outlook Summary: • Ready to proceed with the Source Leaf Integration. • We now have enough Source Cards (10) for GCT integration tests and RCT. • Concentrator Card tests will start as soon as the card is here.. Goals for Fall 2006: • Watch closely the progress on the Leaf and make sure that the Leaf Source Integration occurs in October. (this is now for sure) • Test the first Concentrator prototype which is arriving on time • Watch closely the GT card production which will enable the GT-RCT integration in December 06. • Produce and install the Source Card system by end of January 07.
