GCT Status since July 06 • This talk describes the GCT progress since the last trigger meeting and the GCT review which took place at the end of July 2006. • Main topics: Source Card, Leaf Card. • Not included in this talk: Issues raised during the May 06 ESR which concern the RCT review this Friday (Installation + Commissioning schedule, Software plan, Optical link Issues, Source Card USB readout ….) CMS Trigger July Review 29/8/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 1
Source Card: Testing at IC • 6U VME Format • USB 2.0 Interface for readout • 2xVHDCI SCSI RCT Inputs • 4xSFP optical outputs • Spartan-3 1M FPGA • RCT data capture • Synchronization test (RCT BX0 vs TTC) • On board temperature monitor • The Source Card was tested at Imperial during the second and third week in July and was found to be working and ready for the CERN integration tests with 2 RCT crates. (1 last test was yet to be done…) • During the last week in July 06 John Jones and Andrew Rose came to CERN to do the in RCT<-> Source Card integration tests. CMS Trigger July Review 29/8/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 2
Source Card Final Bench Test • The final test was to transfer data from the RCT emulator to the first Source Card then received them via optical link to the second source card. Shown here is the RCT emulator assembly…. CMS Trigger July Review 29/8/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 3
Source Card Test Setup • Various patters of data were transferred error-free from the RCT emulator to the first source card (ECL). The data were received by the second source card (optical link) and there we tested via USB for data integrity. No error was observed BER < 10-12 CMS Trigger July Review 29/8/06 CERN C. RCT Data to GCT Clock and Control RCT CRATE 1 Source Card TTCci + RCT CLK. Fanout RCT CRATE 2 Source Card: Integration tests • The Integration tests were done using 2 RCT crates, one Source Card and on TTCci which provided the clock and the control signals. • Each RCT crate was driving one cable sending data to one Source Card. • The data transfers were synchronous and synchronization was achieved using the L1-Reset Signal. CMS Trigger July Review 29/8/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 5
Integration Test Results • Data produced by the two RCT crates was successfully transmitted to one Source Card via ~ 5 m cables. About 109 x 30 bit words were transferred resulting to a BER < 10-10 • The timing calibration procedure was also preformed with 2 RCT crates and it was determined that we have rather broad window (8.691 nsec) to capture the data which includes any timing discrepancies between the two RCT crates. The test was done by moving the data capture clock in steps of 104 psec. • The second Source Card was also tried with similar results. Hence, at the moment we have 2 boards in full working order. • One problem with the TTCRx that popped up during integration was fixed in the firmware using redundant PCB lines in the board layout. • Hence, the only mods made to the original PCB design were related to two LEDs at the front and at the back of the board. • The order for 8 more Source cards went out on the 24/8/06 under a contract for 10 days PCB fabrication and 7 days assembly. Therefore we should have them by the 15/9/06 and should be ready to ship them to CERN by the 30/9/06 CMS Trigger July Review 29/8/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 6
Source Card Schedule • Summary:(a) The first GCT milestone, to integrate one RCT crate with one source card during July 06, has been met. (b)Next goals: (1) Produce enough Source Cards to read RCT and decouple the RCT from the GCT schedule (end of Sep. 06) (2) Conduct the integration tests with the Leaf Card when it is available early in October 06. Source Card Immediate Aims: CMS Trigger July Review 29/8/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 8
Leaf Card Status Aug. 06 • The Leaf Card was supposed to go to for manufacturing on 1.7.06. The design review happened eventually on the 12.6.06 and the design went out one month late on the 30.6.06 . • The manufacturer had promised to deliver no later than the 31.7.06. However, they came back with questions on the design and this delayed (intentionally or unintentionally) the manufacture of the card for one more month. • We are now sure that they will deliver 2 assembled cards to LANL tomorrow 2 months accumulative delay relative to the Feb. 06 GCT plan CMS Trigger July Review 29/8/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 9
Leaf Card Plans I • Two Leaf Cards will be send to LANL on the 30/8/06. • LANL will do JTAG and power tests on them and will ship them to Wisconsin on the 6/9/06. • Wisconsinshould ship them to CERN around the 11/9/06 and the Cards should be at CERN no later than the 15/9/06 and perhaps earlier. CMS Trigger July Review 29/8/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 10
Leaf Card Plans II Therefore, the Leaf Schedule will be: • After arrival at CERN the card will be tested by Matt Stettler for 2 weeks and this brings us to 6/10/06 (LECC week in between) • Integration with the Source Card will start on the 9/10/06 and after that we will produce the rest of the source cards. CMS Trigger July Review 29/8/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 11
Concentrator + Wheel Card • A design review for both cards took place at CERN on the 11/8/08. Several suggestions were made particularly by C. Schwick which have now been implemented. • The Layout for both cards is now complete. • The preliminary gerber files for the Concentrator were sent to the manufacturer in Switzerland. The manufacturer replied that they could not construct the PCB due to difficulties with the vias. • The PCB will now be made in the UK by the same manufacturer who made the FED and the Source card who after receiving preliminary gerber files are confident that they can make this card. • Final ‘production’ gerbers will be sent to the on the 30/8/06 and manufacture and assembly should take most of September 06 One Concentrator Card at hand by 1/10/06 CMS Trigger July Review 29/8/06 CERN C. Foudas - Imperial 12
Summary and Outlook Summary: • The Source Card project has been a success. • The Leaf Card has a 2 Month delay but it has now been manufactured. • Concentrator and Wheel proceed as planned. Goals for Fall 2006: • Produce 8 Source Cards to provide RCT with a readout system. This will decouple the RCT and GCT schedules. • Watch closely the progress on the Leaf and make sure that the Leaf Source Integration occurs in October. • Test the first Concentrator prototype which should arrive on time • Produce and install the Source Card system by end of January 07.
