  2. What a noun is… • A noun is a person, place, or thing. • Specific names of things are called proper nouns. This counts for all names or titles, like: • Jane • New York • Big Mac • Any word that is a person, place, or thing can only ever be the subject or the object of a sentence.

  4. Subjects: • A subject is the topic of the sentence– whatever the sentence is about. • There can only be one subject for any given sentence. It almost always is at the beginning of the sentence. • John takes Jane a flower. • Sam likes ice cream. • John hates math.

  5. Objects: • There are different types of objects that we’ll discuss later. In general, the object of a sentence is the noun that the action of a sentence is happening to. • The object is always after the subject and action of the sentence (verb). • John takes Jane a flower. • Sam likes ice cream. • John hates math.

Now you try! • Identify the subject in these 5 sentences: • After 3rd period, Sally ate the hamburger quickly. • Josh kept the bug to himself until lunchtime. • For now, Marco has seven jellybeans. • Angie hates turtles, but loves turtleneck sweaters. • Unlike Jill, Norman likes to eat bananas.

  7. Now you try! • Identify the object(s)in these 5 sentences: • Kasey likes to play baseball. • Cameron went to the grocery store. • George has blue hair. • Alice went trick-or-treating as a bunny rabbit. • Harry likes cotton candy just a little too much.
