What a noun is… • A noun is a person, place, or thing. • Specific names of things are called proper nouns. This counts for all names or titles, like: • Jane • New York • Big Mac • Any word that is a person, place, or thing can only ever be the subject or the object of a sentence.
Subjects: • A subject is the topic of the sentence– whatever the sentence is about. • There can only be one subject for any given sentence. It almost always is at the beginning of the sentence. • John takes Jane a flower. • Sam likes ice cream. • John hates math.
Objects: • There are different types of objects that we’ll discuss later. In general, the object of a sentence is the noun that the action of a sentence is happening to. • The object is always after the subject and action of the sentence (verb). • John takes Jane a flower. • Sam likes ice cream. • John hates math.
