A New Era in Politics • Political system became more democratic • Many states eliminated property rights for voting requirements, white males, city folk • Jackson was popular w/these new voters many of whom were in the S & W • Volatile early life, mellowed out in older years • Spoils system, award jobs on basis of loyalty • Jackson believed that citizens should have a larger part in democracy, forced out large numbers
made the presidential election system more democratic • At the time a caucus system was used in which members of party in Congress chose the nominee for president • Jackson replaced with the national nominating convention where delegates from states came together to choose.
Nullification Crisis • SC’s economy was bad which they blamed on the tariffs. 1828, Tariff of Abominations • SC threatened to secede from the union • Calhoun put forth nullification, to declare a law null and void • Robert Hayne & Daniel Webster debate • Jackson defended the Union, tariff 1832 • Force Bill-military to enforce acts of congress • Henry Clay asked for new bill to lower tariffs through 1842 and SC withdraws nullification HAYNE WEBSTER
Jackson and Native Americans • Jackson’s inaugural address said he would move all Indians to the Great Plains, believing that area would never be settled • Indian Removal Act, 1830, money to relocate • Cherokee sued in GA, Worcester v. Georgia • Ruled had to respect Cherokee land rights, didn’t • Van Buren enforced, Trail of Tears, 4000 died • 1838, had moved all but Seminoles, most people supported these moves.
Jackson Kills the National Bank • Jackson, like many westerners, was suspicious of the national bank, thought it was unconstitutional • National bank played an important role. • After Jackson’s reelection he removed all deposits from bank and put them in state bank.
