  1. 28.1 Levels of Organization 2.1 Atoms, Ions, and Molecules Set up Cornell Notes on pg.27 • Topic: 28.1 Levels of Organization • Essential Question(s): • Create a Flow Map sequencing the five levels of organization. Please add a colored picture for each. (p. 856 in book) KEY CONCEPT The human body has five levels of organization. ESSAYS DUE TODAY

  2. KEY CONCEPT The human body has five levels of organization.

  3. Main Idea • Specialized cells function together in tissues, organs, organ systems, and the whole organism. • Scientists have organized multicellular structures into five levels based on complexity

  4. 1) Cells: Organisms are made up of specialized cells that each have a particular structure that enables it to perform a specific task Exs: • Red blood cell- delivers oxygen to all tissues • Nerve cell- provides a pathway for electrochemical nerve impulses

  5. cell tissue 2. Tissues: are groups of similar cells working together to perform a specialized function

  6. 3. Organs: are different types of tissues working together to perform a function • Exs: • Lungs • Heart • Stomach

  7. 4. Organ systems: two or more organs working together to perform a function • Perform the most complex activities in the body Ex: Respiratory system- lungs, sinuses, nasal passage, pharynx, larynx

  8. There are 11 major organ systems in the human body (p. 856)

  9. Organism: The organ systems make up the entire organism. • For the organism to stay alive, all of the systems must interact and work together.

  10. Cells Working Together (3m27s)

  11. Levels of Organization Flow Map Example Organ System Organ Organism Tissue Cells • Lungs • Site where gases are exchanged • Human • Epithelial lung cell • Epithelial lung Tissue • Respiratory System • Brings O² for cells • Expels CO² and water vapor • Nose, sinuses, pharynx, larynx, trachea, lungs Use pg. 855-856 to help you.

  12. Levels of Organization Flow map • Start by picking your organism then your organ system, organ, etc… • You MAY NOT use the respiratory system

  13. Levels of Organization Flow Map (p. 26 in INB) Organ System Organism Organ Cells Tissues • Type of Cell • Type of Tissue • Name of specific organ • Function of your organ • Organism of choice (animal) • Name of organ system • Function of your organ system • Include list of organs/tissues involved Picture Picture Picture Picture Picture Use pg. 855-856 to help you.
