How can we better use research & information? How can we stay in touch? Catherine Dennison, Thomas Pocklington Trust
Plan • How have others used research & information? • How might you use the material? • What additional info/ support is needed? • Staying in touch
Example 1 Dorset Blind Association Using NatCen findings on access to health services, wellbeing, overall health.
‘…This sense of isolation among older visually impaired people is very real. That is why the work carried out by the Dorset Blind Association and its volunteers is so vital, a fact highlighted by their Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Holyhead.’
Example 2 Emma Cruickshank, My Sight Nottinghamshire Using stats & research evidence to influence a CCG.
Used numbers of people with VI from SL data tool to inform one of their local CCGs • Raised awareness of links between ethnicity, learning disability & sensory impairment • Resulting activity around school nursing & community low vision services • CCG hosted eye health awareness event • Including MSN in an event for people with learning disabilities
Example 3 Cam Sight Taking a theory of change approach and assessing impact.
Ann Streather, Cam Sight ‘..it has proved incredibly helpful over numerous occasions in describing what Cam Sight does..’
Measuring outcomes Before & after questions: • Emotional Well-being • Social inclusion • Economic Well-being • Independent living How could we improve the service? Are there any particular changes in your life that have resulted from using the service?
Example questions… Emotional well-being • On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being low and 10 high, where do you think you are at the moment in coming to terms with your sight difficulties? Social inclusion • On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being low and 10 high, where do you think you are at the moment, in terms of being able to meet people and feel part of things?
Ann Streather, Cam Sight ‘It is very helpful to be able to say to funders, this is how we measure outcomes not leave it to them to decide. Also, outside statutory bodies, the CCG, county council etc are all very interested.’
Discussion • What potential for using the material? • What gaps in knowledge/ information?
