  1. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS Welcome to an on-line health and safety training package intended for staff and students working within UofE buildings on the Bioquarter campus Information contained within these pages is intended for use by University of Edinburgh staff and students only.

  2. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS This on-line training package is intended for workers based within University buildings on the Bioquarter/Little France campus, but is not a substitute for any other forms of training that may be offered. CMVM @ Little France Last updated: April, 2018

  3. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS Please take time to view the following material, and direct any urgent questions to your H&S Advisor or Line Manager, or the Little France Buildings H&S Manager (the contact details for whom are shown on the last page of this presentation). Thank you CMVM @ Little France

  4. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS The Bioquarter (including the Little France campus) is constantly evolving, and is likely to continue to evolve for as long as the site accommodates the Royal Infirmary and other hospitals, University buildings, and other premises associated with the delivery of healthcare, education and research.

  5. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS In that context, movements of vehicles and engineering plant associated with construction and maintenance activities are likely to be a fairly constant feature, with corresponding implications for the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and other road users throughout the campus.

  6. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS The precise locations of construction and maintenance activity may vary from day to day, and may become apparent with very little prior notice, or even no notice at all, especially where works are in response to sudden and unanticipated problems such as flooding or other damage to premises or infrastructure.

  7. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS Some construction activities may cause increased levels of noise and dust, and perhaps also some vibration (this latter aspect may have a bearing on the performance of some delicately balanced scientific and medical equipment).

  8. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS It is essential that we respect demarcated boundaries that are intended to distance us from risks within construction sites, which may include vehicle and plant movements, and possibly also excavations, risks from height, high tension electrical supplies, etc.

  9. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS There is some risk, too, that underlying services (gas, water and sewerage pipelines, and electrical and communications cables) might be disturbed by activities with construction sites, with the potential to cause difficulties elsewhere within the campus.

  10. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS Even under normal conditions, setting aside construction activities for a moment, some visitors to this campus are travelling to visit sick friends and relatives, and they might not be entirely focused on pedestrians and other road users moving around them.

  11. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS Delivery drivers are not always familiar with the site either, and may make abrupt turns and/or park in inappropriate places until they can properly orientate and proceed to where they are supposed to be going.

  12. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS And the locations of public transport hubs may vary for any number of reasons, so we should remain alert to information relating to these, and not put ourselves at risk by running for buses and taxis.

  13. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS There are several car parks serving the campus, and some of these are occasionally closed for maintenance, necessitating diversions and sometimes the need for a lengthy walk to your normal place of work. Exercise great care when using diversions, and comply with signage, etc.

  14. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS Pedestrians: • Be alert to changing conditions and activities on the campus that are associated with movements of construction vehicles, etc. • Take account of signage, and comply with instructions. • Take account of route diversions, and comply with instructions. • Recognise that motorists may be confused by changes, and that they may act unpredictably.

  15. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS Cyclists: • Be alert to changing conditions and activities on the campus that are associated with movements of construction vehicles, etc. • Take account of signage, and comply with instructions. • Take account of route diversions, and comply with instructions. • Recognise that pedestrians and motorists may be confused by changes, and that they may act unpredictably.

  16. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS Motorists: • Be alert to changing conditions and activities on the campus that are associated with movements of construction vehicles, etc. • Take account of signage, and comply with instructions. • Take account of route diversions, and comply with instructions. • Recognise that pedestrians may be confused by changes, and that they may act unpredictably. • Respect allocated disabled parking spaces.

  17. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS Human Factors: • People very often just do not seem to notice that construction work is going on, and may even walk around signage without seeming to see it. • We should never be reluctant to call out to the seemingly oblivious, to warn them of potential danger. • What might seem to be a convenient short- cut might well prove to be an unwise choice. • ALWAYS THINK SAFETY FIRST!

  18. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS Report Problems: • Any incident causing injury from whatever cause, but also when there was no actual injury but the experience amounted to a “near miss”, must always be reported: https://www.accidents.is.ed.ac.uk/ • This may help raise awareness of an avoidable vulnerability, and ensures also that all appropriate remedial actions are taken. • Prompt reporting may help avoid someone being injured in future.

  19. HEALTH & SAFETY @ LITTLE FRANCE SAFETY AROUND THE CAMPUS Ultimately, even if you are convinced that you could not possibly be a safer person, you can’t always be quite so sure about others moving around you. Just to repeat the point … Take care out there!
